Disney To Focus On Streaming In A Corporate Restructuring
Some big news hit yesterday, folks. Potentially game-changing, in fact. Disney, almost undisputedly the largest media company out there, is making a massive change to the way they work. Namely, they’ve reorganized the company and are now going to prioritize streaming content. Going unsaid, but easy to ascertain, is that theatrical releases may suffer because of that. Whether that means the current tentpoles will stay the same but everything else is moving more in the Disney+ direction remains to be seen, but it’s clear that changes are coming for the Mouse House (coming hot on the heels of Soul being moves to their streaming platform), which may take years to fully understand. Read on for more below… According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is forming a new Media and Entertainment Distribution group within the company, which will make the creating and distributing of streaming content a large priority. So much is unsaid, and frankly unknown, but one can only wonder if this means we’ll see less Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars on the big screen. Maybe not, but as theaters currently suffer, it does seem a bit like Disney is trying to distance themselves from a potentially sinking ship, especially with their own services like Disney+ and Hulu to play with. Time will tell, but this could be a red letter date in cinema history, though possibly for the wrong reasons. Here is some of the story: New Disney CEO Bob Chapek is reorganizing the company to prioritize the creation and distribution of content for streaming. Under the new structure, Disney is creating a Media and Entertainment Distribution group responsible for both the dissemination and ad sales for all of its content, including across streaming services including Disney+. Chapek has tapped Kareem Daniel, formerly president of consumer products, games and publishing, to run the newly formed division. The newly created group will be responsible for the profits and losses for the entirety of Disney’s media and entertainment businesses and will oversee distribution, operations, sales, advertising data and technology for all of Disney’s content arms. It will also manage operations for Disney’s streaming services and domestic television stations. Disney will feed the Media and Entertainment Distribution group with programming from its film studios, general entertainment television studios and sports group.
