Ashley Graham announced the birth of her baby boy three weeks ago, and the world celebrated along with her.
After all, motherhood is a magical experience that’s all tears of joy and nonstop bliss, right? Yeah, not so much.
Skipping right past the part with changing diapers and waking up so often you’re not sure if you technically slept, there’s another aspect of becoming a new mom that absolutely no one talks about — and in fact people are barred from talking about! (More on that later…)

As an internationally famous supermodel, you’d think Ashley would be scared to show people her postpartum body in all its raw, unretouched glory, but that’s exactly what she did Monday night.
In a very candid Instagram post — along with a very different kind of underwear selfie (above) — the 32-year-old describes the “messy parts” of recovering from giving birth:
“Raise your hand if you didn’t know you’d be changing your own diapers too🙋🏻♀️ After all these years in fashion I never could’ve guessed that disposable underwear would be my favorite piece of clothing but here we are! No one talks about the recovery and healing (yes even the messy parts) new moms go through. I wanted to show you guys that it’s not all rainbows and butterflies! It’s been tough, but my friend Chelsea @cmrh and ceo at @fridamom is making waves and starting honest conversations. It’s unbelievable the obstacles we still face talking about what women really go through. All their stuff she sent me has been a life saver.”
To what “obstacles” is she referring? It’s more than just being afraid to show people the less glamorous side of yourself.
Frida Mom, the company whose products Ashley is gushing about, recently were told they couldn’t air an ad for their product during the Oscars. Not because they couldn’t pay for the spot but because of the content of their commercial.
As the description reads on the YouTube channel — where the ad has now been viewed 1.6 million times:
“The ad you’re about to watch was rejected by ABC & the Oscars from airing during this year’s award show. It’s not ‘violent, political’ or sexual in nature. Our ad is not ‘religious or lewd’ and does not portray ‘guns or ammunition’. ‘Feminine hygiene & hemorrhoid relief’ are also banned subjects. It’s just a new mom, home with her baby and her new body for the first time. Yet it was rejected. And we wonder why new moms feel unprepared.”
Yeesh. Thank goodness Ashley Graham has the courage to talk about these things, even if ABC apparently doesn’t.
