Disgraced Andrew Formally Stripped Of Remaining Royal Titles — DETAILS

The last of Andrew Mountbatten Windsor’s prestigious honors have been officially wiped away.

In a moment many royal watchers knew was coming, King Charles has now taken the ultimate formal step in distancing the monarchy from his embattled younger brother, the former Prince Andrew. And the way it happened so quietly — through a sober entry in The Gazette, which tracks and codifies all public records in the United Kingdom — made the news feel even more stark.

Published on Monday, the Gazette record confirmed the King has ordered Andrew’s name removed from the registers of both the Order of the Garter and the Royal Victorian Order, which are two of the most esteemed distinctions in the British honors system. And with this latest update, those final connections to Andrew’s former princely standing have now been completely erased.

The Gazette entry was backdated to October 30, which was the same day Buckingham Palace revealed the King had initiated the formal process to eliminate Andrew’s remaining titles and honors. And obviously, this decisive final step arrives after years of spiraling fallout connected to Andrew’s association with the late Jeffrey Epstein.

The notice began with the first of two unflinching directives:

“THE KING has directed that the appointment of Andrew Albert Christian Edward MOUNTBATTEN-WINDSOR to be a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, dated 23 April 2006, shall be cancelled and annulled and that his name shall be erased from the Register of the said Order.”

And it concluded with the second:

“THE KING has directed that the appointment of Andrew Albert Christian Edward MOUNTBATTEN-WINDSOR to be a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order, dated 19 February 2011, shall be cancelled and annulled and that his name shall be erased from the Register of the said Order.”

It was all handled through the Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood at St. James’s Palace, per People and others.

Oh, and the use of Andrew’s full legal name is no accident. The palace has previously stated that, after relinquishing his princely designation, Andrew is now to forever be known simply as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.

FWIW, these titles once represented some of the highest marks of royal trust. The Order of the Garter is Britain’s oldest order of chivalry, while the Royal Victorian Order is bestowed upon those who provide exceptional personal service to the sovereign and the royal family. Both distinctions were originally granted to Andrew by the late Queen Elizabeth II, too, so the removal of them now adds an additional layer of poignancy.

As you will no doubt recall, renewed public scrutiny around Andrew and Epstein — especially in the wake of Virginia Giuffre’s allegations against him — pushed King Charles’ brother further from the royal fold. Andrew previously stepped back from public duties in 2019 following a disastrous BBC News interview, then lost his military titles in 2022.

Now, this latest update means this long process has reached its inevitable conclusion.
