Doja Cat is walking it back.
As we reported earlier this weekend, the Say So singer’s meteoric rise in pop culture and the music industry was severely tempered after fans came for her over alleged past racist remarks in internet chat rooms. All this, too, just days after defending the young singer for her minor role in a spat involving Lana Del Rey. And now, firmly in the limelight through it all, the 24-year-old is speaking out.

Late Sunday night, the Los Angeles-born artist released a full statement on her Instagram page, apologizing for past remarks and appearances in allegedly controversial internet chat rooms and video chats. She also came clean about an eye-opening old song of hers that further fanned the flames of those racism allegations. Opening her apology with an explanation of her past internet behavior, the singer (real name Amalaratna Zandile Dlamini) wrote:
“I want to address what’s been happening on Twitter. I’ve used public chat rooms to socialize since I was a child. I shouldn’t have been on some of those chat room sites, but I personally have never been involved in any racist conversations. I’m sorry to everyone I offended. I’m a black woman. Half of my family is black from South Africa and I’m very proud of where I come from.”
Though born in LA, her South African heritage comes from father Dumisani Dlamini, an actor best known to American audiences for his work in Sarafina! alongside Whoopi Goldberg in the early 1990s.
From there, Doja Cat further addressed the controversy against her, noting she did record the controversial song Dindu Nuffin, claiming it was a misguided attempt to fight back at racism as a person of color. She continued:
“As for the old song that’s resurfaced, it was in no way tied to anything outside of my own personal experience. It was written in response to people who often used that term to hurt me. I made an attempt to flip its meaning, but recognize that it was a bad decision to use the term in my music. I understand my influence and impact and I’m taking this all very seriously. I love you all and I’m sorry for upsetting or hurting any of you. That’s not my character, and I’m determined to show that to everyone moving forward. Thank you.”
Well then.

Obviously, it’s been a crazy couple weeks for Doja Cat; Memorial Day Weekend will end like this for her, just days after the world witnessed a meteoric rise to Billboard‘s No. 1 spot with her Say So remix alongside Nicki Minaj. What a whirlwind the last couple weeks must have been…
Fans were divided over the apology itself here, with some clearly refusing to give her the benefit of the doubt, and others ready to move on altogether.
