Ellen DeGeneres Explains Viral Photo Of Her & ‘Friend’ George W. Bush Enjoying Cowboys Game Together: ‘Be Kind To Everyone’!

Ellen DeGeneres doesn’t need to share someone’s beliefs to be nice to them. She’s just… nice!

During the monologue of her Tuesday show, the daytime diva addressed the now-viral photo of her and wife Portia de Rossi sitting next to George W. and Laura Bush at the Dallas Cowboys game on Sunday — an image which sent Twitter into a tizzy over the weekend.

Many who saw the gay power couple enjoying the game while sitting next to the conservative former first couple were perplexed. How could these two pairs, who clearly hold different political beliefs, be seated so close to each other without entering a screaming match about gay rights or abortion? That is how it works on social media, after all. So, why didn’t Ellen and George give each other a verbal smackdown IRL?

Well, Perezcious readers, it turns out people with different social and/or political beliefs are still physically capable of being nice to one another!

We know, we know. It’s a lot to process. We didn’t think it was true at first either. But then we listened to what Ellen had to say about the viral incident, and why people should take a page from her (and George W.’s) kindness playbook.

After explaining to her audience how she and Portia were invited to the game by Charlotte Jones, daughter of the Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones, the comedienne said:

“During the game, they showed a shot of me and George laughing together, and so people were upset. They thought, Why is a gay Hollywood liberal sitting next to a conservative Republican president?”

Ellen went on to joke these viewers “didn’t even notice I’m holding the brand-new iPhone 11,” adding:

“But a lot of people were mad, and they did what people do when they’re mad: They tweet.”

Instead of highlighting the mean tweets like some of her late-night counterparts might have, Ellen shared a positive tweet she says she “loved,” which read:

“Ellen and George Bush together makes me have faith in America again.”

DeGeneres couldn’t have agreed more with that user, noting:

“Exactly. Here’s the thing. I’m friends with George Bush. In fact, I’m friends with a lot of people who don’t share the same beliefs that I have… We’re all different, and I think we’ve forgotten that that’s okay that we’re all different. For instance, I wish people wouldn’t wear fur. I don’t like it, but I’m friends with people who wear fur. And I’m friends with people who are furry, as a matter of fact. I have friends who should tweeze more.”

The talk show icon went on to remind everyone her signature phrase — be kind to one another — applies to everyone; even the people you don’t see eye to eye with.

She explained:

“But just because I don’t agree with someone on everything doesn’t mean that I’m not going to be friends with them. When I say, ‘be kind to one another,’ I don’t only mean the people that think the same way that you do. I mean be kind to everyone… Even people who are already playing Christmas music — I mean seriously, there’s no excuse for that, but I’m kind to them.”

LOLz! She didn’t say it was easy!

The former sitcom star closed her comments by thanking both Jerry and Charlotte Jones, along with the Bushes, “for a Sunday afternoon that was so fun — by the way, you owe me $6 for the nachos.”

Ha! Ch-ch-check out Ellen’s explanation in the clip (below).

What are we gonna do without this eternally nice being on the air every day?
