Thursday night’s special Disney Family Singalong on ABC brought us icons like Beyoncé and Christina Aguilera belting out classic Disney songs, and also a healthy dose of nostalgia for our favorite tunes from the past!
However, fans were disappointed to find out that Zac Efron would not be partaking in a rendition of We’re All In This Together with his former High School Musical castmates.

Host Ryan Seacrest prefaced Efron’s introduction, explaining he was “in the middle of nowhere” with shotty WiFi and couldn’t participate, but would be doing a special intro:
“Now just when you thought we couldn’t give you any more feels, I have a surprise for you. This star is hunkered down in the middle of nowhere with patchy WiFi, but he does not want to miss out on tonight.”
Seacrest continued:
“He became a household name thanks to his earlier work as Troy Bolton in the High School Musical trilogy. It’s Zac Efron.”
His earlier work?! You mean his BEST KNOWN work!
Efron jumped in and shared via video chat (below) before core members of the cast Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, Lucas Grabeel, and more Disney stars launched into their performance:
“Hi everyone, I hope that you’re safe, and that you’re healthy and you’re doing as well as possible during these unprecedented times. It’s my greatest pleasure to introduce a musical performance by some of my oldest friends, and some new ones. I hope you enjoy — and remember: we are all in this together.”

Obviously, fans weren’t necessarily pleased to see the gang reunite without the lead heartthrob. Here are a few of the best reactions via Twitter:
“the fact that you could not pay zac efron all the f**king money in the world to acknowledge for even a minute that he was in high school musical. that man regrets that movie every day of his life.”
“WHAT DO YOU MEAN ZAC EFRON DIDNT SING WITH THE HSM CAST BRO WE ARE NEVER ALL IN THIS TOGETHER AFTER ALL HUH #DisneyFamilySingalong”
“Lol I guess Zac Efron didn’t want to give us a reason to remember why Drew Seeley sang his HSM vocals. #DisneyFamilySingalong”
“they really added all these actors to make up for zac efron not wanting to sing with the hsm cast #DisneyFamilySingalong”
This is especially confusing that he didn’t participate because director Kenny Ortega shared with Deadline earlier this week while teasing the special that the 32-year-old “immediately jumped” at the chance to be included. He told the outlet:
“We couldn’t reach Zac until late but when we did, he immediately jumped in, of course. Everyone we reached out to was quick — and you’ll see it in their spirit and the way they come together from their homes.”
BTW, if you weren’t already aware, Zac’s voice was blended with Seeley’s for his iconic character in the first movie! ICYMI, Drew also filled in for the actor during the High School Musical: The Concert tour, though Efron did sing himself in the second and third flicks after also appearing and singing in Hairspray.
