It’s been nearly a year since Granger Smith‘s son, River Kelly Smith, tragically passed away in a drowning accident at their family home in Georgetown, Texas.
The Tailgate Town singer’s wife Amber Smith shared an image (above) to Instagram on Tuesday from one year earlier, before the accident even took place, sharing with it a message about how life has changed. She began:
“One year ago. My caption was ‘enjoying daddy being home and Texas rain.’ Life was good. No one has a perfect life, but it was pretty dang good. Happy kids, happy marriage, happy hearts. We couldn’t have known the storm we would be facing in less than 30 days.”

Just so unbelievably sad. The Texas native wrapped up her caption before citing a passage from the Bible:
“Life is unpredictable. Beautiful and terrible things will happen. Life can change in an instant. Love your family. Love your friends. Love your God. John 16:33 ⛈💔✝️”
You may recall at the time of his passing that both parents shared they would “donate his organs so that other children will be given a second chance at life.” Just a month later in July 2019, Amber announced that through his organ donation, at least two lives had been saved:
“We got the letter that our tiny, red-headed hero gave life to 2 adults. A 49 year old woman and a 53 year old man. I cried when we opened it. Cried out of sadness & cried out of love. I’m so proud to be River’s mama and I’m so grateful to God that he gave him to us for those incredible 3 years. I pray these 2 recipients live healthy, joy filled, full throttle lives just like Riv. It was one of the hardest, yet easiest, decisions we’ve ever made. There are over 113,000 people waiting for transplants & 20 people die each day waiting. Go to OrganDonor.gov to see how you can help give life as well. “
So beautiful.
Despite how difficult things understandably were and likely still are for the Smith family, they do not want anyone to feel sorry for them. The couple, who are parents to daughter London and son Lincoln Monarch, previously shared in an emotional video:
“Don’t feel sorry for us because we feel very blessed we had an incredible little boy for three years. We feel really good about that. We feel really good about our other kids and their states of mind right now. We are going to live our best lives.”
Even almost a year later, we’re sure this is still extremely hard for the Smith family to cope with. They continue to be in our thoughts.
