President Joe Biden has become the latest American to test positive for COVID-19.
This marks the first time the Commander-in-Chief, who is fully vaccinated and boosted, has contrasted the virus.
According to Dr. Kevin O’Connor, the President’s physician, Bidden has a runny nose, fatigue and an occasional dry cough
“I anticipate that he will respond favorably, as most maximally protected patients do,” O’Connor said on Thursday.
Reads the official White House statement:
“This morning, President Biden tested positive for COVID-19.
“He is fully vaccinated and twice boosted and experiencing very mild symptoms.
“He has begun taking Paxlovid. Consistent with CDC guidelines, he will isolate at the White House and will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time.
“He has been in contact with members of the White House staff by phone this morning, and will participate in his planned meetings at the White House this morning via phone and Zoom from the residence.”
Biden is 79 years old.
His wife, Jill, has since tested negative and will not be making any changes to her official schedule, sources indicate.
“Consistent with White House protocol for positive COVID cases, which goes above and beyond CDC guidance, he will continue to work in isolation until he tests negative,” the White House continued in its message.
“Once he tests negative, he will return to in-person work.”
Former President Donald Trump also tested positive for the virus while in office.
He ultimately stayed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center to be treated for a COVID infection.
At the moment, it doesn’t appear as if Biden will require any sort of hospitalization.
Concluded the White House on Thursday:
Out of an abundance of transparency, the White House will provide a daily update on the President’s status as he continues to carry out the full duties of the office while in isolation.
Per standard protocol for any positive case at the White House, the White House Medical Unit will inform all close contacts of the President during the day today, including any Members of Congress and any members of the press who interacted with the President during yesterday’s travel.
The President’s last previous test for COVID was Tuesday, when he had a negative test result.
Breakthrough cases of COVID-19 — infections that occur in people who have been fully vaccinated against the virus — are possible and expected because the vaccines are not 100 percent effective.
Most importantly, however, vaccinated people who test positive will likely be asymptomatic or experience a far milder illness than if they were not vaccinated.
The majority of deaths from COVID-19 — around 98 to 99 percent — are in unvaccinated people.
We send President Biden our wishes on a full recovery.
