Melissa Etheridge Reveals 21-Year-Old Son Died From An Opioid Addiction: ‘My Heart Is Broken’

This is so awful…

Melissa Etheridge‘s 21-year-old son Beckett died on Wednesday after an opioid overdose. According to the star singer, the young man had struggled with addiction for some time.

Etheridge’s PR team first shared news of his tragic death early Wednesday afternoon on Twitter. Hours later, the 58-year-old singer spoke to People, releasing the following statement (below):

“Today I joined the hundreds of thousands of families who have lost loved ones to opioid addiction. My son Beckett, who was just 21, struggled to overcome his addiction and finally succumbed to it today. He will be missed by those who loved him, his family and friends.”

She continued from there, adding more about Beckett’s long battle with addiction, as well as her own personal pain in watching him go through it:

“My heart is broken. I am grateful for those who have reached out with condolences and I feel their love and sincere grief. We struggle with what else we could have done to save him, and in the end we know he is out of the pain now. I will sing again, soon. It has always healed me.”

So, so sad.

Etheridge shared Beckett (pictured above, from 2011) with ex-partner Julie Cypher. The former couple also shares 23-year-old daughter Bailey, who posted her own condolences about the tragedy on Instagram late Wednesday evening.

“I don’t know what to say,” the older sister wrote in her tribute post, as she mourned the loss of her little brother with a series of family pictures (below):

Awful.

Beckett’s father, famed singer-songwriter David Crosby, also spoke out (briefly) after his biological son’s death, as well. In a social media message, the 78-year-old Crosby, Stills, & Nash founder and longtime rock star seemed to take issue with a Twitter user who claimed he’d just been a “sperm donor” for the same-sex couple, and had no other relationship with the child after his birth and during his life.

“Not true,” David briefly wrote in response to the since-deleted tweet questioning his involvement in Beckett’s parentage, as you can see (below):

He has not publicly responded further than that.

Obviously, the young man’s death has affected a lot of people. Our thoughts and prayers are with Etheridge, Cypher, and all of Beckett’s surrounding family, friends, and loved ones who have been so affected by his untimely death. Such a tragedy… we can’t even begin to imagine. Ugh.

RIP…
