Poor Michael Che.
The Saturday Night Live star revealed on Monday he lost his grandmother to the coronavirus on Sunday night. He also mentioned he hadn’t gone to sleep yet — even though it was already Monday afternoon.

Between the grief and the anger and the lack of sleep, Che went on a rambling, poignant, wild rant on Instagram, posting in an otherwise empty IG feed:
“Hi. I’m Michael Che, from TV. Last night my grandmother passed away from the coronavirus.”
He continued:
“I’m doing ok, considering. I’m obviously very hurt and angry that she had to go through all that pain alone. But I’m also happy that she’s not in pain anymore. And I also feel guilty for feeling happy. Basically the whole gamut of complex feelings everybody else has losing someone very close and special. I’m not unique. But it’s still scary.”
The Weekend Update anchor then expressed the fears we all have right now, writing:
“I don’t know if I’ll lose someone else to this virus. I don’t even know if I’ll be lost to this virus. Who f**king knows?”
Before sort of apologizing:
“I shouldn’t curse. I’m just frustrated, cause there’s so much we still don’t know about it, and I don’t think we are getting the whole truth.”
His frustration then led him to speculate wildly as he wrote:
“I actually believe this is 5G poisoning. And not because I’ve done any research on this, or even understand what 5G really is.”
Yes, there is a conspiracy theory going around about 5G radio frequencies used by mobile phones. There are even some celebrities spreading it, like singer Keri Hilson.

But the thing about poison from radiation is that it doesn’t spread from human contact. The transmission doesn’t have the kind of exponential growth we’re seeing. Nothing else does; this is pretty obviously a virus.
So… why buy into that then?
“I just refuse to believe I lost my sweet, beautiful grandma, because some n**** ate a bat one time. I’m sorry. Even if that IS in fact how this all started. I’m just not willing to accept that right now. F**k THAT. I need a better story. I know, I shouldn’t curse, but I’m grieving.”
Che then switched gears again, telling people to eat healthier.
“Make sure you’re getting your vitamins, and water, and probiotics, and dark leafy greens, and all that other good stuff I never thought twice about until the last couple weeks, so you can boost your immune system, and help you fight this awful virus in the unfortunate event you get it. Look, I know how easy it is to sit around eating cookies and s**t in quarantine. Believe me. That’s my jam. But this virus seems to affect people with pre-existing health conditions the most. And you know how you get a lot of those pre-existing conditions..? Sitting around eating on cookies and s**t.”
It seems to us this is maybe Che’s way of showing how much he cares about everyone and wants everyone to be OK?
He went on to complain about the media reporting death tolls instead of telling people “what they should be eating and what foods to avoid” or something more helpful like that. After more rambling, he wrote:
“And to anybody that’s lost someone to this virus like I have, I don’t have to tell you how much it hurts. But just know that we will make it through this.”
That would have been nice — but he pulled a 180 immediately, writing:
“But then again, maybe we won’t! What do I know? This could be IT. I [sic] freaking out.”
He finished:
“I bet somebody tried to warn him, like, ‘That bat smells a little funny. And his dumbass was probably like, ‘Ehhhhh, what’s the worst that could happen?’ Whatever. I’m just mad.”
In a caption on the post, he seemed to reassure his friends and followers, writing:
“i swear, i’m fine”
Poor guy. Here’s the whole post:
There was only one response to the post; presumably the rest had been deleted by Che. But he chose to leave up a comment by fellow comic Amy Schumer, who wrote:
“I’m so sorry honey. They don’t eat bats because they’re adventurous. They eat them because they are poor. At its most basic level this is about imbalance of wealth. ❤️”
In case you have no idea what she’s talking about…
Scientists researching the virus last month disproved the conspiracy theory about COVID-19 being engineered by the Chinese government; they concluded it couldn’t have been manufactured at all but instead had a natural origin.
In fact, because of the similarity the virus has to the coronavirus found in bats and pangolins, they are pretty sure now the virus developed in animals before being transmitted somehow to a human. Many have suggested, due to the place of origin, that the first point of contact was a Wuhan market in which animals are kept in cages and sold for food.
And again, there is nothing to suggest this has ANYTHING to do with 5G phones.
As for the healthy eating advice, well… it’s just generally good advice, right? We mean, it couldn’t hurt.
Take care of yourselves, everyone. So sorry for your loss, Che.
