OceanGate is facing even more backlash following the death of five passengers on its Titan submersible. Why is that? Well, online sleuths discovered a job posting from the company advertising an “immediate opening” for a submersible pilot – which was still live during the search efforts for the vessel and the group of men.
Oof…
According to Insider on Friday, the listing was on OceanGate’s website and Indeed this week. The business was asking for “a committed and competent individual with combination of strong mechanical and interpersonal skills who can work on sensitive marine equipment, perform regular maintenance and operate complex systems to support dive operations.” OceanGate also requested for someone who can work in small spaces, such as going through a 28-inch diameter ring, and is “positive and energetic with [a] good sense of humor.”

It’s unknown when the job listing was posted. But, per Insider, OceanGate was accepting applications until Friday morning, at least on Indeed, and it was removed hours later that day. Now, OceanGate most likely was hiring for this position before the tragedy. But that didn’t stop many social media users from having some strong opinions about the timing! Mainly, they were astonished to find it still up on their site while the Titan submersible was missing with the five now-deceased voyagers, including OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush. See the reactions (below):
“Wow there’s a job listing @OceanGate for a Submarine Pilot & Technician ..”
“This is a reminder to put yourselves first. No job is worth your health or sanity. Barely a week & ocean gate already has an opening”
“Oceangate has a new job opportunity for a submarine pilot that magically just popped up.”
“I need to know if this was posted before, or after”
“Hiring now?! They need to close for good”
“It really don’t matter if you’re an office worker for the damn billionaire CEO. These jobs will replace you in a heartbeat #oceangate #titan”
“Remember when everyone was saying, ‘Don’t kill yourself for a job that would replace you within two weeks?’ Well it hasn’t even been one week … “
“OceanGate put up a job posting for a new sub pilot. Yes, they were that fast. These companies will replace you in a heart beat. Prioritize yourself, always.”
At this time, no one from OceanGate has addressed the job posting debacle. However, The Seattle Times reported on Thursday that the company’s offices were closed indefinitely. So we’ll see if anyone can offer some sort of explanations about this situation – if anything, they can take a moment to clear up the timeline of when this listing was posted!
