Olivia Wilde Outraged Over Airlines Editing Lesbian Kiss Out Of Her Film ‘Booksmart’

Olivia Wilde is NOT here for the homophobic airline cut of her film Booksmart.

The actress and director responded with dismay and disappointment after a fan pointed out on Twitter that the coming-of-age comedy’s lesbian “hookup scene” was completely edited out of the in-flight movie.

Noting that while the specific intimate moment between actresses Kaitlyn Dever and Diana Silvers was omitted, similar romantic scenes between male and female characters were not.

The fan wrote:

“Tried watching Booksmart on the plane and they cut the ENTIRE lesbian hookup scene like not even a KISS was allowed! oh but don’t worry guys, the Straights got their kiss.”

Srsly? What year is this?

Wilde replied, calling the censorship a “bummer” before questioning what could make the scene “too obscene for airplane viewing” seeing as there was “no nudity.”

She tweeted:

The O.C. alum went on to address the censorship while speaking to Variety at the 11th Annual Governors Awards in Los Angeles. She told the outlet:

“I don’t understand it. There’s censorship, airline to airline, of films, which there must be some kind of governing board to determine. We rate it a certain way. If it’s not X-rated, surely it’s acceptable on an airplane.”

The 35-year-old pointed out the absurdity of how airlines allow “insane violence of bodies being smashed in half” to be shown on flights, but still censor a love scene between two same-sex characters, continuing:

“There’s insane violence of bodies being smashed in half and yet a love scene between two women is censored from the film. It’s such an integral part of this character’s journey. I don’t understand it. My heart just broke. I’m trying to get to the bottom of it; I want people to experience the entire film.”

Dever (above, insert) was just as upset over the airline edit, telling Variety she had no words. She said:

“It’s ridiculous. I don’t even know what to say to that. That makes me so mad.”

The fan who originally shared the news gave an update on Monday, revealing she was flying with Etihad Airlines. She also claimed others have come forward about similar censorship on Delta and Emirates flights as well.

Delta, for its part, has assigned any blame to the third-party editing company it apparently hires to provide its own edit of the movie. In a statement to People, the airline explained it runs the third party’s edit if anything in the unedited version doesn’t meet company guidelines, regardless of whether parts of the film that don’t violate Delta’s guidelines have already been cut.

And, to be clear, Delta said homosexual content does NOT violate its guidelines — despite the fact another fan claimed the word “lesbian” had also been censored from a Delta version of the film.

WTF!?

For what it’s worth, Delta’s statement read:

“Delta’s content parameters do not in any way ask for the removal of homosexual content from the film. We value diversity and inclusion as core to our culture and our mission and will review our processes to ensure edited video content doesn’t conflict with these values.”

Please do. We don’t need to deal with homophobia and no leg room simultaneously.
