Robert Carradine’s Ex Claimed He Tried To Kill Them During ‘Psychotic Breakdown’ Years Before His Death

[Warning: Potentially Triggering Content]

Details about Robert Carradine’s mental health struggles are surfacing following his death.

As you know, the 71-year-old actor died by suicide on February 23. His brother, Keith Carradine, revealed the Lizzie McGuire alum secretly battled bipolar disorder for nearly two decades. And although Robert did not publicly discuss his mental health issues, it turns out they actually came to light during his tumultuous divorce with Edie Carradine.

For those who don’t know, the pair, who share kids Marika and Ian, separated in July 2015 after 25 years of marriage. Robert filed for divorce four months later, which revealed details of a near-fatal incident with Edie! OMG!

According to Us Weekly on Friday, Edie filed a declaration in April 2017, saying that the Revenge of the Nerds star became depressed and had been hospitalized following the death of his older brother, David Carradine. The Kill Bill star was found hanging in a closet in a Bangkok hotel room in 2009 with a rope around his neck and genitals. A medical examiner hired by the family said he died by asphyxiation, but ruled out suicide. ABC News reported that David “accidentally suffocated in a lone sex practice known as autoerotic asphyxiation.” Oof.

After David passed away, Edie said Robert’s “episodes just continued to get out of control,” and that he’d destroyed a plaster wall at a rental in Woodstock, New York, with a hammer and a knife. Things allegedly took a scary and nearly deadly turn in March 2015.

Edie claimed Robert admitted he “deliberately” drove their car into an oncoming semi-truck during a road trip that month while they were traveling to visit their daughter to try and kill them both! Whoa! The car accident left him with multiple broken bones, while she had a concussion and a hand injury. She further alleged the incident left her with PTSD. Edie wrote in the filing:

“After enough recovery time in July, I decided to sit down with our children and confront Bobby about the ‘accident.’ Bobby confessed to me and our two children that he deliberately drove into the truck to kill us both. Because of Bobby’s worsening violent behavior and my own emotional traumas after the incident, I felt it was best for the safety of myself and our children, that Bobby continue staying with [his brother] Keith. I am concerned about Bobby getting any of the guns in this divorce. I fear he is capable of hurting himself or others.”

How terrifying!

For his part, Robert addressed the situation in his own court declaration, saying he suffered a “psychotic breakdown” at the time. He said he was placed on medication for bipolar disorder after David died. The Joyride star then made allegations against Edie of his own. In the filing, Robert claimed his ex-wife had him sign a power of attorney, giving her decision-making control over him and his assets, which he did so under duress. He went on to allege that Edie’s “persistent interference with my medical regime, and in particular, my prescribed medications” hurt his recovery and that she “would take me off my medication, and the result is that I would regress back into an acute psychosis,” adding:

“While in this acute psychotic state, [she] urged me to get behind the wheel and drive her to Colorado. On the way, we were in a terrible automobile accident, at which time I was almost killed.”

Edie, however, denied the allegation, saying:

“I refuse to take such blame. [His] statement is untrue.”

Robert further claimed that while off his medication and “not doing well” during that time, she took him to see a shaman for four days “to try and remove the ‘demons’ which were supposedly inside me.”
