Selena Gomez is looking back on her music career when she was still operating with her band The Scene and signed to Disney.
The 31-year-old Rare pop star launched her pop era as the frontwoman of the band. They released three albums together before she stepped out and went fully solo.
During a recent appearance at Twilio’s SIGNAL conference, Selena explained that she “fought” Disney for the right to release a song that was initially intended for another artist.

The song in question was “Who Says,” which arrived in 2011.
“It’s actually a funny story: I was working with Disney at the time, and they were actually giving the song to another artist,” Selena recalled, via People.
“And I cried — I remember, I was with my mom — because I loved the song so much,” she continued, explaining that she made a case for keeping the track. “I basically said to my label, ‘I feel like my fans are young and they need it.’ That’s all I kept saying because I was 16 at the time. I was like, ‘I think my fans really need it; tell [them] my fans really need the song.’”
Of course, it ended up working out in her favor.
Selena reflected on what “Who Says” meant to her, saying, “And I love, love that song, and it has carried with me through my whole career, and I fought for it.”
At the time, “Who Says” became Selena‘s biggest hit on the Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at No. 21. It retained the honor until 2013 when her solo single “Come & Get It” hit No. 6. She’s since topped the chart with 2019′s “Lose You To Love Me.”
Speaking of new music, Selena is gearing up to drop a new track called “Single Soon” on Friday (August 25). A producer appears to be teasing a second new song, too!
“Single Soon” will find her sharing radio space with Miley Cyrus, who is also unleashing her song “Used To Be Young.” Find out what Selena had to say about the imaginary competition between them.
