They say the United States and Great Britain are two countries separated by a common language. But when it comes to body language, there are no extra U’s or awkward confusion about whether a “fanny pack” is something filthy.

And in one shrug, Kate Middleton communicated quite a bit about her relationship with Prince William — at least, according to some viewers.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took part in a holiday special with The Great British Bake-Off host Mary Berry called, appropriately, A Berry Royal Christmas.

The couple seemed to get along fine throughout most of the special, including preparing a roulade together — a real challenge to be sure.

However, there was one moment sharp-eyed viewers caught on Sunday night which may have shown the true state of their union.

While sitting in front of a cozy fire having a pleasant convo with the other guests at their holiday party, Prince William reached out to put his hand on Kate’s shoulder… and she instinctively jerked her body away, shrugging off his touch!

Oof. That is not a good sign!

That shrug means one of two things. It’s either a)

“Oh, hell no! We both know you slept with that highfalutin bitch and therefore have lost all PDA privileges for the foreseeable future. Don’t think the Christmas spirit or the presence of Mary Berry is going to change that fact.”

or b)

“I have a sunburn.”

And since they’re English, we can pretty much rule out the sunburn.

Just sayin’.

In case you forgot (and clearly Kate did not), a rumor spread around Royal circles earlier this year claiming Prince William had cheated on his wife with Rose Hanbury, the Marchioness of Cholmondeley. Even worse, she and Catherine were supposed to be friends. Even worserer, the alleged affair is supposed to have taken place during Kate’s third pregnancy, meaning she was at home suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum and throwing up all over the place when Will was getting his royal scepter appraised. Allegedly.

 

The rumor was given more life by the Palace itself, which traditionally doesn’t respond to mere gossip. However, this time they actually sent legal warnings to one publication which had mentioned the rumors, calling the publication of “false and highly damaging” speculation was “a breach of his privacy pursuant to Article 8 of the European Convention to Human Rights.” The gentleman doth protest too much? Yeah, quite a lot was made of that overwrought response. If anything it made the whole thing more suspicious.

But it’s with that context we must assess this shrug. Are we reading into the moment too much? We don’t think so… But let us know what YOU think, Perezcious experts!
