“Amid this unexpected, devastating storm, there have been moments when the pain has been so overwhelming that I contemplated the unthinkable,” she said in a lengthy statement.
Gascón was once an awards season favorite, but her campaign took a nosedive after past negative tweets resurfaced in late January.
Gascón’s past racist and Islamophobic tweets resurfaced in late January after she scored a best actress nomination for her role in “Emilia Pérez.”
Gascón made Oscars history as the first transgender woman to be nominated for best actress in a leading role.
“I trust that meritocratic America will welcome her on the night of the Oscar,” Italian director Stefania Rossella Grassi said of Karla Sofía Gascón in the wake of her tweet scandal.
“As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain,” Gascón said in part.
The actress stated that “Islam is becoming a hotbed of infection for humanity that urgently needs to be cured” and described Muslims as “a DEEP DISGUSTING HUMANITY.”
