Tony Bennett‘s family has disclosed some private details about his passing.

On Friday morning (July 21), the legendary pop, jazz, and big-band vocalist died at the age of 96, just two weeks shy of his August 3 birthday. He had been battling Alzheimer’s disease in his final years.

Now, his family gave their first interview where they spoke about his final words.

“His last words to me [were], ‘Thank you,’” Danny Bennett, his son, told Hoda Kotb on the Today show. “Can’t say it better than that.”

“The music never left him,” his wife, Susan Benedetto added. She also revealed his last words to her: “That he loved me.”

They also disclosed that the last song he sang before he died: “Because of You,” a cover of Larry Clinton‘s 1940s song.
