Eric Bigger: I Was Supposed to Be the First Black Bachelor! (But Arie Luyendyk Jr. Stole My Job!)

In the summer of 2017, the Bachelor Nation waited to learn who would eventually be the next leading man.

Eric Bigger was a serious contender, with a tremendous amount of fan support.

He had just made a splash on Rachel Lindsay’s season, but ABC shocked fans with the seemingly random choice of Arie Luyendyk Jr.

It turns out that the network almost had Eric as their first Black Bachelor … only to chicken out and cat yet another white lead.

When we say “almost,” we don’t mean “the show could have gone with Eric but that wasn’t what happened.”

We mean that, according to Eric Bigger himself, he was actively in the running and the show was prepared to put him in the role.

Then, without any real explanation, Arie Luyendyk Jr. was announced in his stead.

Eric Bigger spoke to The Sun, sharing that he “wanted” to be The Bachelor back in 2017.

Additionally, he revealed that the network asked him if he was up for the role and was preparing for it.

It would have been a duel season, not unlike The Bachelorette‘s 2015 season with Kaitlyn Bristowe and Birtt Nilsson.

“I was okay with that, like ‘yeah, lets rock & roll,'” Eric revealed.

“And I was in New York,” he shared, “and people thought I was there to go on Good Morning America [to make the Bachelor announcement].”

“But then as soon as I got on my flight to come back to LA, that’s when Arie came on and he was the Bachelor,” Eric recalled.

Eric revealed that this came as a surprise to the point where it “shook” him.

He had received “no feedback” or explanation as to why the network went in another direction.

Eric explained: “I felt like they went back to someone like Arie because he’s more relatable from the audience base, they can get it.”

Eric was asked the obvious question of whether or not race was likely a factor in the decision.

“Yeah, for sure, that’s the audience,” Eric acknowledged.

The Bachelor franchise is infamous for having a starkly white majority viewing audience — and the network has been criticized for catering to the racists among them.

“That’s the crazy thing,” Eric reflected.

“The first time I went on the show, that’s when I realized it was really a divided America,” he admitted.

“I draw the line where I can be like, ‘this is wrong, but I understand why that’s right for them,'” Eric explained.

“I believe they don’t really understand me as a whole,” Eric shared.

“And where I come from,” he explained, “and the world I’m a part of.”

Eric added: “And they don’t have to.

“It doesn’t hurt them, my world doesn’t affect their world on any level,” Eric explained.

“It’s all about relating,” he reasoned, detailing how production selects their stars.

“When you look at the leads from the show who are Black,” Eric observed, “their backgrounds are much different than mine.”

“They grew up in affluent neighborhoods or their parents did,” Eric pointed out.

He added: “they have diverse backgrounds.”

“And,” Eric affirmed, “it’s great!”

“But I come from a predominately Black background,” Eric conveyed.

“And,” he continued, “from the inner city where it’s tough.”

“And it’s not that it’s bad,” Eric generouslyc laimed, “but it’s business, let’s be clear.”

“It’s a numbers game,” Eric said accurately of reality TV casting.

“You’re not going to put someone in front of the camera if they don’t bring the audience,” he reasoned.

Eric characterized the production attitude towards casting conventionally attractive straight cisgender white people every year: “It’s safe.”

Eric saw firsthand how differently the franchise treated his background at the production level.

“I’ll be honest, this is something not too many people know,” he revealed.

Eric continued: “There were some producers at the time on the show, I won’t name names, when we got to [Eric’s hometown] Baltimore.”

“I thought they were going to show up,” Eric said of the producers.

“But when I got there, they weren’t on site,” he shared.

“They were like ‘oh, logistically it didn’t work out,'” Eric recalled.

“But I’m like, they went on every hometown to the other cities,” Eric pointed out.

“I think the perception of Baltimore and how dangerous or violent it could be stimulated some preconceived notion of fear,” he suggested.

“Not,” Eric affirmed, “that it’s right.”

As with the majority of racism, some of the ways in which Eric experienced the relentless whiteness of The Bachelor franchise weren’t conscious malice.

Instead, they took the form of oversights and unconscious neglect.

Like on too many scripted shows, simple features of behind-the-scenes television like hairstyling were unprepared for Black hair.

“The challenge most of the men on my season faced is, the barber on set was a white barber,” Eric shared.

“And,” he explained, “he didn’t know how to cut a brother’s hair.”

That is a huge oversight for a professional production company to make. It’s their job to think of this kind of thing.

“Even with Rachel, she had hair and makeup people who didn’t really know,” Eric revealed.

“My overall experience on the show was beautiful though,” he affirmed.

“I fell in love,” Eric expressed. “It changed my life.”

Bachelor’s Arie Luyendyk Jr. & Lauren Burnham Bring Their 1-Week-Old Daughter Home From Hospital After Respiratory Issues

Arie Luyendyk Jr. and Lauren Burnham finally brought home their baby girl! As you may know, the couple recently welcomed boy-girl twins. However, their newborn daughter had to remain in the hospital after being placed in the NICU due to respiratory issues. And on Saturday, the former Bachelor gushed that his wife surprised him and […]

Who Was the Worst Bachelor Ever?

In 2020, Peter Weber was often called the worst Bachelor of all time.

After he proposed to Hannah Ann Sluss, ghosted her, dated Madison Prewett for like a day, and then finally wound up with Kelley Flanagan, who also got tired of him, he may have earned that title.

It’s not hard to see why the guy is so widely disliked – after all, he wasted everybody’s time, delivered a painfully anti-climactic conclusion, and broke quite a few hears with his indecisiveness.

But while it’s not often that you’ll find us defending Pilot Pete here at THG, we have to push back against the idea that he’s the unequivocally the worst Bachelor of all time.

Sure, he’s the most recent to deliver a total letdown of a season – but he’s not the first, nor the last. In fact, Matt James’ season ended with many disappointments as well.

So join us on a trip down Fantasy Suite memory lane as we take a look at the rose master generals who were more thorn than blossom and determine who was really the biggest dud among studs.

Take a look:

1. The Front-Runner

Peter weber and his ladies
You might hear the term “worst Bachelor of all-time” bandied about a lot in reference to Peter Weber. But as you’re about to find out, Pilot Pete actually has quite a bit of competition in that department.

2. Matt James

Matt james gma picture
Matt James, the first Black Bachelor lead, came in with high expectations, for sure. While he personally didn’t do anything during his 2020 season that would be considered “Worst Ever” material, the franchise crumbling around him made for one of the ickiest seasons in franchise history.

3. He Chose Rachael Kirkconnell

Rachael kirkconnell with matt
Incredibly, Matt’s final rose winner was Rachael Kirkconnell, who made headlines during the season for all the wrong reasons – old photos of her at a racially insensitive Plantation party, and her tone-deaf response to that controversy. Rachael eventually apologized more sincerely, but not before Chris Harrison made the situation exponentially worse with an even more tone-deaf defense of Kirkconnell. By the time the final rose was handed out on TV, the couple had already gone their separate ways – and many fans had divorced the Bachelor itself.

4. Nick Viall

Nick viall in a suit
First on our list is Nick Viall. We know what you’re thinking — Nick’s not such a bad guy. In fact, he still hosts a wildly popular podcast about all things Bachelor Nation. But that’s exactly our point …

5. Viall Behavior

Nick viall appears on abcs good morning america
If you google the term “here for the wrong reasons,” Nick’s face should be the first to pop up. From the start, this guy made it perfectly clear that he loves the limelight more than he could ever love any romantic partner.

6. Not Taking the Hint

Nick viall and chris harrison
Nick won the first impression rose from lawyer Andi Dorfman and made it to her final round, where he lost to Josh Murray. He then weaseled his way into Kaitlyn Bristowe’s season. Next, he appeared on Bachelor In Paradise, before finally landing a role as The Bachelor in 2016.

The Hottest Bachelors in History: Where Does Matt James Rank?

With Matt James ready to make history on ABC, it’s almost time to talk about The Bachelor spoilers … but also this:

Which Bachelor is the #1 hottest of all time!?

‘Cause, even if ABC does scour the Earth for eligible dudes who are the total package, that’s still a real debate.

And subjective, we know. But a fun one!

For those keeping score, Matt is the star of The Bachelor‘s 25th season, making him the 24th Bachelor of all time.

(Brad Womack famously got two cracks at the job … and yet didn’t get a happily ever, or even close, after either).

Obviously, Matt is the first black Bachelor, and the franchise’s second black lead overall, following Rachel Lindsay.

The show’s low-key racism and how it needs to handle Matt’s 2021 season are topics that will be debated at length.

But we’re glad he’s the new leading man of the franchise, and today we’re just here for pointless fun in his honor.

Gaze at the ghosts of Bachelors past, see for yourself who’s the hottest of the hot and where you’d rank Matt.

24. Matt Grant

Matt Grant is, if you couldn’t immediately tell, British. He’s the first (and only) British Bachelor, in fact. Amazingly, he gave his final rose to none other than Shayne Lamas. They were then engaged for like 40 minutes before she upgraded BIGLY to celebrity gossip blogging legend, scholar and entrepreneur Nik Richie.

23. Lorenzo Borghese

Lorenzo borghese photo
If there were a Bachelor, and season of The Bachelor, that left less than a memorable impression, it might have to be Lorenzo Borghese. He is eminently forgettable. But he’s not exactly hard to look upon.

22. Andrew Firestone

Andrew firestone pic
Is Andrew Firestone a contender for Hottest Bachelor Ever? Maybe. Do you remember that he was actually on The Bachelor? Less-convincing maybe.

21. Bob Guiney

Bob guiney carves a turkey
Bachelor Bob Guiney starred in Season 4 of the ABC hit. No, seriously, he did. Guy was kind of a turkey TBH.

20. Charlie O’Connell

Charlie oconnell
Not to be confused with his brother Jerry O’Connell, who’s starred on things like Sliders, Scream 2, and Crossing Jordan, Charlie O’Connell once starred on the ABC show.

19. Byron Velvick

The bass-fishing Byron Velvick had the outdoorsy thing going for him in Season 7, that’s for sure. He got engaged to Mary Delgado, with whom he had a tumultuous relationship.

Arie Luyendyk, Jr. and Lauren Burnham Reveal Heartbreaking Miscarriage

Arie Luyendyk Jr. and Lauren Burnham — one of the few couples to have made it from The Bachelor finale to the altar — opened up this weekend about some devasating personal news:

Lauren recently miscarried the pair’s second child.

The husband and wife uploaded a video on YouTube yesterday that detailed their story.

“A little over a month ago, we got the most exciting news and we found out that we were pregnant with our second baby,” the video description reads.

“We made so many plans. We bought a new house with more space, we planned how we wanted to tell you all and we envisioned our future with Alessi’s little brother/sister.

“We were planning to share our journey through pregnancy with you, but unfortunately we didn’t get the happy story we had hoped for.”

Said the former Bachelor lead and his spouse:

“We decided to share this part of our journey with you, because well, we share everything with you!

“But also because we hope that by talking about this we can make other couples going through these times a little less lonely.”

laur and ari

The video is 27 minutes in length and opens up on a fun-filled note.

We see Burnham saying that she has “a little secret surprise” and is planning to purcuase two pregnancy tests… sneak them into the bathroom,… mark one as positive … and arttempt to prank the race car driver, who had accused her of being pregnant because she was “so mean” to him lately.

But then the joke turned out to be on Lauren.

Because one of the tests turned out to actually be positive.

After taking another to confirm it, Burnham, tears in her eyes, says:

“That took a turn that we did not plan for,” turning to the couple’s daughter, Alessi, and telling the one-year old: “You’re going to be a big sister.”

From there, after showing an ultrasound to viewers – in which they learn their eight-week old fetus is only the size of a five-week old fetus – Lauren says that they “didn’t get the best of news.”

And her husband says he “is still processing” everything.

After a few more doctor visits, the two were given the news of a “missed miscarriage,” which happens when the fetus is no longer alive but the body doesn’t recognize the pregnancy loss or expel the pregnancy tissue.

As a result, a woman’s body may still release hormones and a woman may still continue to experience signs of a pregnancy.

Says Arie:

“It’s been a roller coaster of emotions, going from scared a little at first because it was so soon, then happy then stressed and worried for weeks on end, and obviously today was the bad news and it’s something you can never prepare for.”

He adds:

“It’s been hard holding this back from everybody.”

“Trying to pretend like nothing is going on is really difficult,” Lauren says in the footage.

“I feel like this is kind of the best way for us to tell the whole story.”

Luyendyk proposed to Becca Kufrin on his final episode as the Bachelor – but then reversed course and asked for Lauren’s hand in marriage on the After the Final Rose ceremony in early 2018.

Less than a year later, the reality stars got married in Hawaii.

Please join us in sending them your best wishes during this very difficult time.

The Bachelor: The Most Shocking Exits Ever … Including Tonight’s

Since the early 2000s, The Bachelor franchise has delivered shockers, emotional meltdowns and twists we never saw coming.

Usually, these result – or stem from – an elimination.

Or a dramatic departure of one’s own volition. Or someone being asked to leave by the show itself. Or just a really bad breakup.

All of the above have left an indelible mark.

With the TV cameras rolling, obviously. Not even The Bachelor spoilers or Bachelorette spoilers can prepare you for this.

Suddenly it’s no surprise that this franchise has stood the test of time, airing for 40-plus seasons, with no end in sight.

The men, the women and the moments featured on this list made their way onto it for very diverse, but very real reasons.

Often through no fault of their own.

All provided images we won’t soon forget. At least not ’til the next season airs on ABC and we update this list once again.

Where does this week’s Bachelor season finale, and its devastating heartbreak for multiple people, rank on the list?

Behold, the most stunning exits in Bachelor history

1. DeAnna Pappas AND Jenni Croft

Brad blows everything
The one that started it all: Brad Womack rejected Jenni Croft on his season finale, and looked poised to propose to fan favorite DeAnna Pappas … who he ALSO rejected! No matter what stunners took place in subsequent years – and we’ve seen a bunch, including the most recent finale – walking away with nothing and breaking two hearts AT THE FINAL ROSE CEREMONY remains the least expected (and least popular) move in franchise history. And moreover, DeAnna became The Bachelorette and also left a fan favorite runner-up heartbroken (we’ll get to that shortly), beginning the Golden Age of Bachelor(ette) Ratings.

2. Becca Kufrin

Arie and becca
It wasn’t just that Arie Luyendyk Jr. got engaged to Becca Kufrin on The Bachelor season finale, then broke it off within a matter of weeks. We’ve seen that many times before. It wasn’t even that he went back to Lauren Burnham, his season’s runner-up, in the wake of that broken engagement. Jason Mesnick (scroll down) pulled that one off too. But the way in which Arie ended things with Becca – blindsiding her with cameras rolling, and ABC airing the 40-minute scene uncut – nearly took the top spot on this list. Just savage. Fortunately for Becca, she got a second chance as The Bachelorette that very summer, and is still together with her final rose recipient Garrett Yrigoyen.

3. Jason Mesnick

Jason mesnick deanna pappas photo
DeAnna Pappas became The Bachelorette, as we said, and threw fans for a loop by rejecting beloved single father Jason Mesnick, who was so smitten with her, in favor of Jesse Csincsak … who she stayed engaged to for like two weeks. Jason was the most obvious pick for The Bachelor in history on the heels of this, but he generated some controversy himself.

4. Melissa Rycroft

Melissa rycroft and jason mesnick
Jason Mesnick upped the ante on both Brad and DeAnna in the finale night shocker department. After getting engaged to Melissa Rycroft on his season finale, he dumped her … on the After the Final Rose special, in favor of runner-up Molly Malaney! At least this one had a happy ending, though: Jason and Molly are happily married, to this day, and have a beautiful family together.

5. Madison Prewett

Madison prewett picture
Madison Prewett’s decision to self-eliminate on The Bachelor finale in 2020 was bizarre for many reasons. 1. She had already given Peter Weber an ultimatum about not having sex with the competition, which he clearly did. 2. She appared to be eliminating herself earlier this season, but showed up at the penultimate rose ceremony and received a rose instead of Victoria Fuller. 3. Peter’s family approved of this! They seemed 100% sold on Madison’s fellow finalist Hannah Ann Sluss, who is 100% sold on Peter … but despite the fact that Hannah Ann was the only one left after Madison’s departure, he’s not feeling it! Remind you of Arie, anyone? Peter sure did a number on her, not to mention …

6. Hannah Ann Sluss

Cuddling with hannah ann
Hannah Ann Sluss’ exit from the show was unlike anything in franchise history. She got engaged to Peter Weber on the finale, only to get dumped after the fact and lay out – live on After the Final Rose – all the reasons Pete strung her along, led her on, withheld critical information, only proposed to her so he didn’t have to let her go, robbed her of her first engagement, and most of all, failed to act like a real man. Just an epic performance by Hannah Ann, who conducted herself with the confidence and maturity you wouldn’t expect from a 23-year-old. Kudos to her.

The Bachelor Stars Ranked: Which Hunk is the Hottest?

With Peter Weber’s time as The Bachelor winding down, it’s time again to talk about The Bachelor spoilers … but also this:

The Bachelor Stars Ranked By Relationship Length: Who’s #1?

Take heed, Colton Underwood and Cassie Randolph, and all Bachelor couples of the future. Take heed. Time passes. Life happens.

Love – and fame – fades. Reality sinks in. And hits hard.

That sounds cynical, we know. But it’s also factual.

Although things have looked up lately, The Bachelor stars have not exactlty had the best track record when it comes to love lasting.

How bad is it? Simply by virtue of being together a year later, Lauren Bushnell and Ben Higgins ranked among the top success stories.

And they still broke up! That says it all right there.

Nick Viall and Vanessa Grimaldi broke up after not even half that much time after a relationship many felt was doomed from day one.

As for the latest case study we saw play out this year?

Let’s just say Colton and Cassie are up against major obstacles (if you saw the recent season, you get it), and the odds aren’t great.

What about for Peter Weber, the man who will hand out the roses in 2020 following a windmill-filled ride on The Bachelorette?

His prospects aren’t much better, although we’re guessing there will be ample opportunities to hook up inside historical structures.

Take what you can get, and don’t get upset. Check out the full Bachelor relationship rankings by length and see how they’ve fared:
