Gabby Petito: Family Gets Matching Tattoos, Calls Attention to Other Missing Persons

The manhunt continues for Brian Laundrie in the wake of the murder of Gabby Petito.

The Petito family is in mourning, seeking justice, closure, and answers.

Gabby’s loved ones are very aware that their daughter has received extraordinary attention, attention not received by countless others.

They are using this painful moment to raise awareness and try to bring something positive out of their own heartbreak.

Gabby Petito family addresses media (28 September 2021)

On Tuesday, September 28, the Petito family held a press conference.

They expressed their gratitude for all of those, from investigators to the media, who have shown such dedication to justice.

Now, they would like to dedicate something to Gabby’s memory.

Gabby’s stepfather, Jim Schmidt, addressed reporters at the press conference.

“We’re just hoping that through our tragedy losing Gabby, that in the future, some good can come out of it,” he expressed.

Schmidt expressed a hope “that we can help other people who may be in a similar situation. What can we do to help people?”

Jim, with Gabby’s mother, Nicole Schmidt, and her father, Joseph Petito, showed the family’s new, matching tattoos.

The tattoos were inspired by designs made by Gabby, who was an artist.

The tattoos read “Let It Be” and “Believe.”

“I wanted to have her with me all the time,” Nicole explained at the press conference. “I feel this helps that.”

Joseph added: “Here’s the end all. We need positive stuff to come through this tragedy that happened.”

He continued: “We can’t let her name be taken in vain. We need positive stuff.”

The family acknowledged the profound role that social media has played in their search.

It was reportedly a tip from a social media user that led authorities to discover Gabby’s remains.

Those remains were then used for a formal determination that she died by homicide.

It is also social media that has helped the family — and the rest of us — understand greater context on what happened before and after her disappearance.

The anecdotes about Brian raging in a restaurant on what may have been Gabby’s last day alive and other eyewitness accounts might not have come out through traditional media.

Additionally, the number of people looking for any sign of Brian Laundrie is owed in part to social media.

But not every missing persons case goes viral as Gabby’s has.

Gabby was a beautiful young white woman with an established social media following and some very conspicuous red flags surrounding her experience.

While she absolutely deserves the attention that her case has received, countless more missing persons deserve the same care and passion.

“Social media was amazing and very influential, but to be honest it should continue for other people, too,” Gabby’s father expressed.

“This same type of awareness should be continued for everyone,” he affirmed.

He asked the media to remember this and to help “all the people that are missing.”

Gabby Petito Foundation tweet

“If you don’t do that for other people who are missing, that’s a shame,” Gabby’s father expressed.

He affirmed that “It’s not just Gabby who deserves that.”

Though the family continues to work out the details of their plans for the Gabby Petito Foundation, the purpose is to help with other cases like Gabby’s.

From 2011 to 2020, at least 710 indigenous women went missing in Wyoming — the same area where Gabby went missing.

We say “at least” because, as we all know, some women are never reported missing. Some women just vanish.

Additionally, men also disappear. Being statistically less likely go missing is not the same as being safe.

We all know that a number of people failed Gabby in her final weeks of life.

The world is grasping for explanations after learning that police seemed to sympathize with Brian and let him go despite a 911 call accusing him of abuse.

The Petito family is trying to focus upon the positive at the moment, instead expressing their gratitude to the FBI agents now working the case.

As for Brian Laundrie, Gabby’s family is asking that he turn himself in to the FBI or to the nearest law enforcement department.

There is a federal warrant out for his arrest, so it should not be difficult for him to end up with the right authorities after he is in custody.

There are millions of people looking at home videos, security camera footage, trail cameras, and more on the off chance that they spot him.

Duane Chapman Joins Manhunt For Brian Laundrie; Mom Calls Cops on Dog

Last week, Brian Laundrie was targeted by a federal arrest warrant following his disappearance and fiancee Gabby Petito’s murder.

Officially, he was only a “missing person” before that. Now, those searching for him are empowered to arrest him.

Duane “Dog The Bounty Hunter” Chapman has raised eyebrows by joining the manhunt.

When he showed up at the Laundrie family home, the fugitive’s mother called the police.

Duane Chapman speaks about Brian Laundrie

Multiple law enforcement agencies continue their ongoing search for Brian Laundrie.

The 23-year-old was allegedly last seen weeks ago at his parents’ home in North Port, Florida.

While the federal warrant for his arrest is not directly for the murder of Gabby Petito, it’s not unrelated.

In addition to officials conducting the search, there are literally millions of people on the lookout for Brian.

That’s what happens when a disappearance-turned-murder case takes social media and the news cycle by storm.

While most of the civilians looking for Brian are just amateurs keeping an eye out, there are also professionals on the case.

Duane “Dog The Bounty Hunter” Chapman has reportedly received a barrage of tips through his own tip line.

Despite being a reality star known for his sensational, over-the-top appearance and manner, he actually is a professional bounty hunter.

What that says about the system of bounty hunting and criminal justice in our nation … well, that’s another matter.

Early this week, Duane showed up at the Laundrie family home.

This is the house that was previously searched by law enforcement as they executed a warrant.

Ostensibly, Duane is assisting in the search for the family’s “missing” son.

Interestingly, Roberta Laundrie called the police on Duane, dialing 911 when he showed up.

“The female, Roberta … called in on 911,” audio recordings reveal that the dispatcher saying.

Apparently the caller, Roberta, “referenced a situation with a male.”

However, Duane claims that he actually spoke to law enforcement before he paid a visit to the Laundrie home.

“It’s a shame they wouldn’t speak with us,” Duane lamented while speaking to Fox News on Monday.

“The police said we were welcome to knock on the door,” he added, “so we did.”

His purpose in going there was simple.

“I wanted to tell the Laundries that our goal is to find Brian,” Duane shared, “and bring him in alive.”

According to police, they handled the call like they would any other.

“We’ve been called to the house numerous times for all sorts of issues: media, protesters, celebrity searchers,” police told Fox News.

“It’s not something normal,” they shared.

“If the family calls and is concerned,” the local police explained, “we will respond like we would for anyone.”

Meanwhile, Duane has spoken about receiving a high volume of tips on his personal hotline.

According to him, a lot of these tips point to Laundrie being somewhere along the Appalachian trail.

That fits with Brian’s known history, as he has apparently camped in that area for months in the past.

Gabby Petito turned 21

Duane shared that he is looking into one tip in particular.

This tip pointed to Brian traveling to a Florida campground that is 75 miles away from the Laundrie house.

Allegedly, he traveled there with his parents in early September … but they may have left without him.

Duane told Fox News that he has heard that Laundrie’s parents spent the night in Fort De Soto Park with their son early this month.

This would have been after Gabby vanished and Brian returned home without explanation.

But before Brian himself disappeared … and before Gabby’s remains were found.

The tip about the campground visit, at least, seemed to check out.

“They were registered, went through the gate. They’re on camera. They were here,” Duane confirmed this week.

“We think at least if he’s not here right now, we are sure he was caught on camera as he went in the gate,” he said.

Duane says that this means “that he was here for sure. Not over in the swamp.”

Fortunately, tips aren’t going exclusively to Duane, as law enforcement aircraft were seen in the area of the campground.

“I think he’s been here for sure,” Duane added.

Upon returning to Florida without his fiancee or any explanation (to the public) for her whereabouts, Brian did two things.

First, he got a lawyer.

Second, he refused to cooperate with any investigators who hoped to find Gabby.

Chris and Roberta Laundrie, his parents, have insisted through their attorney that they do not know their son’s whereabouts.

Allegedly, they hope that authorities do find their son, claiming to be “concerned” about him and hope that he is found.

There has been widespread speculation that they in some way assisted their son in disappearing, but they insist that this is untrue.

Brian Laundrie’s Parents Deny Helping Him Escape Authorities After Gabby Petito’s Death

Questions are still swirling about Gabby Petito’s death, but right now it’s not a matter of what the answers are, but who has them. Brian Laundrie almost certainly knows more about the situation, but of course, he conveniently went missing before speaking with law enforcement about the case. His parents, Christopher and Roberta Laundrie, reported […]

Gabby Petito Case: Police Under Investigation for Letting Brian Laundrie Go After Domestic Dispute

The search to exact justice for Gabby Petito and give her family answers and closure continues.

An arrest warrant was issued for Brian Laundrie, and more details are emerging about the final hours and days before Gabby’s murder.

New information about the police stop just two weeks before Gabby’s murder paints a clearer picture of how officers totally failed.

The 911 dispatcher told them that Brian was seen hitting Gabby repeatedly, but they chose to bond with him and paint her as the “crazy girlfriend” anyway.

For weeks, there has been a lot of discussion surrounding the Gabby Petito case and the 911 call.

On August 12, eyewitnesses saw a domestic violence incident at the Moonflower Community Cooperative.

A man was seen “slapping” and “hitting” a woman outside. That man was identified as Brian Laundrie. The woman was Gabby Petito.

One can only imagine how many abuse incidents happened in private before the abuser is bold enough to do it out in the open.

Witnesses saw and called 911 to report the domestic battery that they were witnessing, describing the couple and their vehicle.

They feared that things might grow even worse. They were right.

For a couple of weeks, there were a lot of questions about the 911 operator and dispatcher. Did they drop the ball?

After all, the police report had indicated that Gabby was the aggressor and Brian was the “victim” in the altercation.

Gabby was generally painted by the officers who pulled them over as unstable and hysterical. Officers have been perceived as having “bonded” with Brian.

As it turns out, the fault there does not lie with the 911 operator or dispatcher.

Fox 13 Utah obtained police audio in which the dispatcher clearly told officers what was going on.

The caller had described “a male hit a female, domestic,” the dispatcher told police before describing the vehicle.

Somehow, officers started with that but, upon seeing alleged scratches on Brian’s face, considered charges against Gabby.

It seems that the only person looking out for Gabby that day was the park ranger — a woman — who sat with her and adviced her to reconsider a clearly toxic relationship.

Meanwhile, the officers called in to protect Gabby did everything but. They separated the two for the night and sent them on their way.

About two weeks later, Gabby was murdered, possibly just hours after yet another public display of aggression by Brian.

The Moab City Police Department is now under investigation for mishandling this.

In addition to a catastrophic failure, this appears to have been a “breach of police department policy.”

Utah state law requires that police either make an arrest or issue a citation in cases like this.

This applies any time that they have “probably cause to believe that an act of domestic violence has been committed.”

While the primary fault for Gabby’s murder lies with her murderer, it’s clear that the police neither “protected” nor “served” Gabby that night.

There’s a lot to be said about laws like Utah’s, which are not uncommon. It’s not always a good policy.

For one thing, if police are required to arrest “someone,” they may end up arresting the victim.

Who gets arrested is often a snap judgmental call and might be impacted by biases and assumptions held by police.

Arresting a victim and giving them a criminal record is not going to keep them safe and could help an abuser further isolate them from friends and family.

While some abusers are “uncontrolled” rage machines, most target their anger and are suddenly calm and well behaved around police.

A sobbing woman distressed and humiliated by the man who claims to love her will often look “hysterical” to the untrained eye.

Unfortunately, this case is a grim reminder that, according to some studies, 40% of police officers are reported for abusing their families.

Keep in mind that domestic violence is one of the most underreported crimes on the planet. The true number would surely be higher.

As a society, we have a lot of choices to make about law enforcement. We clearly need to reframe who is entrusted to protect whom.

Additional reports on the manhunt for Brian Laundrie shed light on his plans before he vanished.

As the case was heating up against him, Brian slipped away after refusing to cooperate with those looking for Gabby.

We now know that Brian left both his wallet and cell phone behind when he left his parents’ home earlier this month.

Authorities have been looking for Brian in the Carlton Reserve.

This is a roughly 25,000 acre nature preserve in southwestern Florida.

It is near his parents’ home in North Port. This is only one of the many avenues being explored.

Additionally, a new person has come forward to share her experience of picking up Brian when he was a hitchhiker.

Norma Jean Jalovec, which sure is a name to have, spoke to Fox News.

Based upon the timeline, it looks like she picked him up just minutes after he exited the vehicle of TikToker Miranda Baker.

At around 6:15 in the early evening, Norma spotted a hitchhiker matching Brian’s description.

She was driving past the dam near Pacific Creek Landing at the time and chose to pick him up.

She agreed to drop him off at the Spread Creek dispersed camping area.

Gabby Petito turned 21

In turn, the man mentioned having a fiancee.

Norma offered to drive him up to the campsite, but he asked to be dropped off on the road outside of it.

Apparently when she joked about him trying to impress that fiancee, he insisted that she let him out, and even tried to “get out” while the car was in motion.

We are all striving for meaning when stories like this are everywhere.

We should look out for each other. We should remember that sometimes the wrong people are trusted to protect us.

And we should all ask where this kind of energy and attention, which Gabby’s murder absolutely deserves, is when BIPOC women and men go missing each year.
