We're all more than a little horrified by Miley Cyrus' weird anti-gay remarks. Even her attempt to "clariify" was a total non-apology.
Now, her new man Cody Simpson is speaking up in her defense.
To hear him tell it, it's our fault for just taking Miley's awful words the wrong way.
Cody Simpson appeared on the Australian show, The Project.
There, he very briefly addressed his girlfriend's deeply controversial comments, since Miley's "clarification" didn't move the meter.
"People took that the wrong way I think,” Cody expresses.
“You don’t choose who you fall for, you don’t choose who you love, whatever gender, whoever you are," he affirms.
We all know that and Miley does, too, but the issue is that there are still a lot of bad people who are eager to use her words as a weapon.
But Cody insists that she did nothing wrong, saying: "No, she’s wonderful."
Well, we can understand why Cody feels the need to speak up for Miley.
Even if it distresses parts of his fanbase just as he comes out with new music.
It's not like he can badmouth her in an interview and then come home and expect to still get pegged, or whatever those two get up to.
"There are good men out there, guys, don't give up," Miley said in her fateful Instagram Live session.
"You don't have to be gay, there are good people with d--ks out there, you've just got to find them," Miley said for some reason.
So she decided to add casual cissexism -- conflating maleness with having a penis -- to her already bad post.
"You've got to find a d--k that's not a d--k, you know?" she added. "I always thought I had to be gay, because I thought all guys were evil."
"But it's not true," Miley concluded. "There are good people out there that just happen to have d--ks. I've only ever met one, and he's on this live."
Miley should have apologized for aggressively dismissing, let's see, the bi and pan community, the lesbian community, the trans community.
Instead, she decided to offer a "clarification."
"I was talking s--t about sucky guys, but let me be clear, YOU don’t CHOOSE your sexuality,” Miley wrote.
We know, Miley. But it doens't look like she understands the harm that her words can do.
"You are born as you are. It has always been my priority to protect the LGBTQ community I am a part of," she concluded. "Happy Monday!"
There's a reason that people found Miley's statement to be so deeply disgusting.
See, Miley is pansexual, so these comments come from a famous members of the LGBTQ+ community.
(No, folks did not love that she tried to dismiss criticisms by suggesting that being part of the community means that she can say what she wants)
Statements like Miley's, even made as a poor joke, can put real people in danger.
People who've claimed to have "overcome" being gay have publicly expressed regret that they used that charade to make money ...
... Particularly after hearing of LGBTQ+ youths abused in an attempt to force them to follow their examples.
On the other hand, Miley being pan is not irrelevant to the conversation.
Members of the LGBTQ+ community will sometimes make inaccurate jokes -- as you know if you've ever glanced at Gay Twitter.
But a non-famous person quipping advice to a parent along the lines of "I went to Europe in high school and now I'm gay" is not the same thing.
Miley's fame means that she must choose her words carefully. It's a small price to pay for millions of dollars and endless privilege.
She must know this -- she has been one of the most famous women on the planet for over a decade.
If Miley wants to lash out at Liam, she doesn't have to throw countless millions of people under the bus at the same time.
She can just say "Liam Hemsworth is a dick" if she wants to.
True, some people will just hear "Liam Hemsworth" and "dick" and their minds will slip into horny mode and they won't get the message.
If Miley was trying to say that Kaitlynn Carter was a refreshing relationship after Liam, but that Cody is equally loving, she can just ... say that.
Trying to be "cute" about how you phrase stuff is how you get yourself dragged on social media for months.
