According to multiple sources and outlets, it's all over for Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart.
Yes, once again.
In July of 2019, the Riverdale co-stars broke the hearts of fans everywhere by announcing they had broken up after two years of dating.
The actress and actor have starred on the aforementioned CW drama as Betty Cooper and Jughead Jones, respectively, since the very first episode of this beloved series.
In September, however, Sprouse and Reinhart reunited... but only temporarily, it now seems.
Sprouse and Reinhart "tend to be on and off but are currently not together," writes People Magazine very plainly, adding that neither Cole nor Lili nor anyone associated with the stars have actually commented on the news.
It is worth noting, before we go any further, that Reinhart spoke to a publication called Coveteur this past fall and warned readers, "don't believe everything you read on the Internet."
Moreover, Sprouse fired back at "baseless accusations" linking him to Kaia Gerber in April.
At the time, a source told E! News he and Reinhart were social distancing separately but were "still together."
What changed since then?
It's unclear.
In his aforementioned post, though, Sprouse said he would not "tolerate" negative remarks or accusations of him cheating online.
"When I first stepped into a public relationship this was one of the foreseeable consequences," he wrote back then.
"And while I truly never intended to indulge any part of my private life to the ravenous horde, it's clear my restraint in updating them has allowed them to push their own agenda onto my habits and lifestyle.
'So in conclusion — please eat my delectable plump a—."
Both stars seemed taken aback and quite irritated by all the attention their romance generated during their time together, especially when this attention turned harsh.
"Twitter is such a vile place," Reinhart wrote in her own lengthy and impassioned Twitter tirade last month.
"Please…. reassess yourself and your ego before you send another tweet into the abyss," she added.
"This is why people choose to keep their relationships private… this is why people don't have social media."
Did the pressure of being in the spotlight finally get to the stars and cause this latest break-up? It's very possible.
But it's also possible that this split won't last very long.
"They know they will likely reconcile once filming resumes," an insider tells E! News, referring to the Covid-19-mandated break in Riverdale production, adding:
"Both aren’t interested in dating other people, just using this time to chill and focus on themselves."
That may be true, but Reinhart also sounded resigned to an eventual end of her romance when talking to W Magazine two months ago.
"If and when we break up on the show, I don't know," she told the magazine. "It's weird being with an actor. You deal with sh-t no one has to deal with."
In October 2018, meanwhile, Reinhart spoke to Teen Vogue and reiterated some of the annoyances that she faced while dating Sprouse:
“It’s not like I’m trying to dangle my relationship in front of people’s faces like, ‘You don’t know anything about us.'
"It’s just, you don’t need to know. People feel like they’re owed that, and you’re absolutely not owed anything by me.”
