When Hannah Gosselin was a young teenager, she was finally old enough to choose which parent should have custody.
Hannah chose her dad. At the time, Kate Gosselin reportedly raged over her daughter’s autonomy.
Now, this independent-minded sextuplet is weeks away from adulthood … but relationships with some of her siblings are strained.
She retains a close bond with her dad, though. Coming to live with him was a relief after years in Kate’s grasp.
An inside source spoke to In Touch Weekly about where things stand between Hannah and Jon Gosselin.
According to the insider, they “are so close” as the high schooler prepares for adulthood and, not long after, college.
In contrast, the source characterized, Kate was “not an easy personality at all.”
But this report does more than just tell us what we already know about what Kate is really like or how lucky Hannah is that she was able to wriggle free of her.
Because, the insider makes clear, Jon is more than just the lesser of two evils.
“They are really good friends,” the source says of the father and daughter.
“They are hilarious with one another,” the insider detailed.
“So basically, the best way to describe Hannah is she’s a completely free spirit,” the source furnished.
This obviously brought her into conflict with her toxic nightmare of a mother.
“And living in the house with Kate,” the insider pointed out, was not a good fit for her.
The source explained how it was Kate “who had endless rules.”
The insider listed that “there were cameras in the house, the kids had their cell phones controlled.”
“It was a very controlling situation,” the source summarized.
“Hannah is going to be doing a lot of her own stuff,” the insider noted.
It sounds like she is really looking forward to “turning 18 when she’s finally able to” to make fully independent, adult decisions.
The problems with Kate’s style of parenting are obvious.
Even if we for some reason didn’t care about the allegations of abuse, a controlling environment is bad for developing minds.
In addition to the emotional toll, it can also make people struggle to make their own decisions as adults.
That is, of course, to say nothing of the moral horror of raising children to be obedient, precisely molded prisoners instead of, you know, people.
Children are people, and it’s a parent’s job to nurture, protect, and guide them.
That everything about Kate broadcasts the idea that she cannot differentiate that from near-absolute control … well, it says a lot about her.
Hannah got away. Collin got away. To say that either got away unscathed is probably naive at best.
It can take years of therapy to overcome the lingering effects of having a bad parent, and even Hannah and Collin may need to unlearn things if either of them ever want to have kids.
As for the six who remained loyal to Kate … well, it could take a lot more time and therapy to process what was behind that.
Why did some kids remain with Kate? Why would some of Hannah’s own siblings have a strained relationship with her after she walked away?
It’s complicated, but there are a whole lot of survival mechanisms and other factors that sometimes make kids cling to the worst parent and reject the somewhat better one.
Maybe, in time, Hannah can reforge tattered bonds with her siblings, but not every broken family can be repaired.
While Kate Gosselin’s life kinda sucks now, things are going well for Hannah Gosselin.
Hannah is just about a month shy of turning 18. She’s about to be an adult.
Even before this milestone, she has experienced years of relative normality and freedom after choosing to live with her dad.
It’s no surprise to anyone that reports say that Kate was “beyond furious” when Hannah escaped her grasp.
An inside source tells In Touch Weekly about how Kate Gosselin felt when Hannah “could choose” who had custody of her.
According to the insider, the notorious reality star was “irate, like beyond furious” that Hannah was old enough to make that decision.
Hannah considered her options and went to live with her father, Jon Gosselin, where they were soon joined by her brother, Collin.
“Kate absolutely adored Hannah,” the source claimed, “and wanted her to stay with her.”
The insider generously continued: “But Hannah just felt that it was not the right atmosphere for her.”
The source noted that Hannah made this choice “even though she absolutely loves her brothers and sisters.”
It couldn’t have been easy for Hannah to leave behind Leah, Alexis, Joel, or Aaden.
In addition to those four sextuplets, she was also leaving a house still shared with twins Mady and Cara, who are now in their early 20s.
The insider affirmed that stepping away from them was “very difficult for” Hannah.
Hannah, who by-the-way is starting her own business at just 17, made the choice anyway.
The source explained that she “felt living with her father was definitely the right decision.”
Of course, at the time, it might have been difficult to predict the deliberate fallout that arose.
A previous report by Us Weekly confirmed that Kate “definitely spent a lot of time making sure the kids don’t spend time together.”
That insider acknowledged that Hannah understandably “doesn’t really speak to her mom much.”
Instead, the source explained, “She’s focused on high school and getting into college.”
Hannah “would love to spend time” with the other six, the insider noted.
However, the source lamented that this “just hasn’t been possible.”
“They live in North Carolina [with mom Kate Gosselin],” the insider explained, “and she lives with her dad [and brother Collin] in Pennsylvania.”
“It is sad,” the source acknowledged.
“She does hope that at one point she can see her brothers and sisters,” the insider expressed.
The source noted: “They were all very, very close.”
“And,” the insider emphasized, “her leaving to go live with Jon had absolutely nothing to do with her brothers and sisters.”
The source characterized: “She loves them to death.”
Meanwhile, her father has recently been gushing to anyone who will listen about how excited he is for Hannah to go off to college so very soon.
The sad fact of the matter is that contentious divorces often drive a wedge in families beyond the separation of spouses.
It’s not as simple as the children seeming to “root for different teams,” though it can look like that on the surface.
A lot of complicated survival instincts and other factors can make kids gravitate towards, for example, a more toxic parent — and lash out at siblings who don’t.
Sometimes, these fractured bonds can be repaired in adulthood — especially if all of the children involved go to therapy.
At the same time, when people stop having shared experiences in their early teens and then spend many years as virtual strangers, they can grow apart beyond repair.
We wish Hannah and her siblings all of the best. And we definitely recommend therapy for anyone who has Kate for a mother.
Recently, Jon Gosselin and Hannah took a trip from coast to coast.
The former reality star kept fans up to date on their journey with some cozy family photos.
In a new statement, Jon is praising his daughter’s qualities as a “free spirit.”
He hopes that his other children, from whom he remains estranged, can be inspired by Hannah’s example and find their own voices.
This week, Jon Gosselin spoke to HollywoodLife about his amazing 17-year-old daughter.
“Hannah’s a free spirit,” he praised.
That gives him hope not only for her future, but for her siblings who remain firmly under Kate’s unforgiving thumb.
“I hope her opening up will allow the others to open as well,” Jon expressed optimistically.
“So,” he continued, “maybe the others will start speaking their mind more freely.”
Jon hopes that they can learn to speak for themselves while “knowing they have a voice then.”
“A mentorship almost,” Jon explained, in reference to Hannah serving as a role model to the others.
“Hannah’s doing it,” he reasoned, “maybe we’ll do it too.”
Certainly, in some fearful environments, seeing one person speak up can inspire others. It can also discourage them, however.
Aaden, Leah, Alexis, and Joel, plus the older twins Mady and Cara, are all affiliated with Kate.
No matter what we think of Kate Gosselin, this is not the fault of those children, not even the 21-year-olds.
Growing up with a tyrannical parent like Kate is not something that people shrug off.
Hannah had to overcome countless generations of human survival instincts to oppose her worst parent.
Jon knows that he’s not going to win any Father Of The Year awards, but he was clearly Hannah’s best option.
We can only imagine the courage that it took for Hannah to take a stand and escape Kate and lead a more normal, healthy life.
Now, Hannah has been with Jon for three years.
In 2018, he gained custody of Hannah and then, after additional effort, of Collin.
Jon and Hannah picked up Collin from the institution where Kate had locked him away.
This week, Jon emphasized how Hannah’s willingness to speak could hopefully one day spread to her siblings.
“It’s not just me speaking for her or mom speaking for her or the others,” he stressed.
Jon speculated: “Maybe they’ll see, ‘I can speak, too. I have a voice as well.’”
It is refreshing to observe that he’s not saying that he, say, wants Hannah to brainwash her siblings into talking to him.
Jon has made it repeatedly clear that his kids can establish contact with him at any time, no questions asked.
But his focus, at least in this statement and in other interviews, is their freedom and their well being — not his own ties to them.
That means that he’s putting his kids ahead of his feelings as much as he reasonably could while discussing them.
That is something that they will not get from Kate.
Many have questioned over the years whether Kate fully understands that her children, or anyone else, are their own people.
Hannah has unfortunately been on the outs with some of her siblings since she broke ranks with Kate.
This is, sadly, expected. When you have a toxic family member, cutting ties with them sometimes means losing touch with others.
We hope that Hannah can exert a positive influence on her siblings. The Gosselins will all need a lot of therapy to process their lives.
It has been nearly a decade since Jon Gosselin was in touch with his twin daughters.
He is much closer with two of his children … who are not close with Kate at all.
17-year-old Hannah Gosselin does not miss her mom at all, even if it means awkwardness with some of her siblings.
In fact, Jon just shared a rare photo of Hannah as the two take an epic cross-country trip.
On Instagram, Jon Gosselin teased a trip across the country.
He shared a look at Hannah’s luggage alongside this rare glimpse of Hannah herself.
The caption? “Going back to Cali. (In my LL Cool J voice) lol.”
Jon showed a view from the rear of the vehicle, with the hatch open, and Hannah staring back over her luggage.
She’s smiling and, fans could not help but notice, looking astonishingly grown up at 17 years old.
“You ready?” Jon wrote atop the image, further teasing the adventure.
The father of eight was sure to let fans and followers know that they had a safe flight.
“Hello sunny LA!” he wrote. “We made it safe.”
Most eyes, however, were on Hannah, as people marveled at the near-adult after not seeing her in so long.
“She is not that grown up omg no she’s not,” marveled one commenter.
Another admited: “Crazy I still pictured her as a little girl.”
We have seen photos of Hannah as a teen before, but they are few and far between, and most still remember her as she was on Kate Plus 8.
“Awww she’s so grown now! Beautiful young lady!” praised a different commenter.
Another fan wrote: “Beautiful Hannah.. seems like only yesterday she was a baby. Safe travels enjoy.
Obviously, many could not help but notice that she appears to be wearing a nose ring. Cute!
Fans and followers also speculated about the reason for the trip.
Despite Jon’s recent breakup (and the messy fallout), it seems unlikely that this is a move.
Instead, most figure that they’re in town for something specific.
One follower suggested that they’re there to “visit Disneyland,” but that feels like a stretch for a 17-year-old in November.
Something a little more timely might be the upcoming BTS concert.
BTS is a K-pop band so wildly popular across the entire globe that it feels silly to even explain who they are, and Hannah fits perfectly into their target demographic.
Recently, Jon sat down with Dr. Oz to give a rundown and an update on, well, everything.
He admitted taht Hannah has been “snubbed by her brothers” who are still Kate loyalists.
Hannah has, he noted, been in contact with some of her sisters.
Hannah is not in contact with Kate, with whom she remains estranged.
“No, I know that,” Jon related. “She feels a little bit slighted from what things have transpired.”
He affirmed: “I know she misses Leah and Alexis.”
“She’s been snubbed by her brothers,” Jon shared grimly.
“So,” he admitted, “I don’t know what’s going on with that.”
Jon does not have contact with his Kate-aligned children, so as much as he wants to, he can’t really help Hannah with any of that.
Divorce can be tricky for kids, and contrary to what many people think, it’s not always pining for their parents to get back together.
Some children, particularly older ones, may find themselves celebrating a split because they have grown to detest one parent or the other.
The problem is that, when there are multiple children in the mix, they might not agree — no matter how much worse one parent is.
When these faction lines are drawn, the children can end up just as fractured from each other — or worse — than their parents are.
Hannah and Collin may view their siblings as confused or worse for siding with Kate, a woman who has done so much harm.
But their siblings may feel the same way, and be extra vocal about it in a misguided effort to appease their very intense mother.
