Holly Madison: The Playboy Mansion was a Toxic Gaslighting Cult!

According to grim accusations made by multiple exes of Hugh Hefner, the Playboy Mansion could be a house of horrors at times.

Holly Madison has been outspoken about her own lived experiences under that roof.

In a new docuseries, Secrets of Playboy, viewers are getting a grim look at what that time was actually like.

According to Holly, the mansion had a cult-like atmosphere where the girls were gaslit, isolated, and controlled.

Secrets of Playboy premieres on A&E on January 24.

In this sneak peek clip of the new docuseries, Holly Madison is interviewed.

All the while, viewers are shown footage of the mansion, including its walls and gates.

“The reason I think the mansion was very cult-like looking back on it,” Holly’s voice begins to explain.

The reason “is because we were all kind of gaslit.”

“And,” Holly continues, “expected to think of Hef as like this really good guy.”

Holly, of course, was one of the women in a relationship with Hugh Hefner from 2001 through 2008.

Gaslighting refers to deliberately making people doubt their own senses and memories in order to make them believe that they are insane.

This abusive manipulation technique is often misused on social media to simply mean “lying,” but takes its name from a play.

It’s clear that Holly means the term in its actual meaning, as the environment encouraged her to discount her own perceptions.

“And you started to feel like, ‘Oh, he’s not what they say in the media, he’s just a nice man,'” she characterizes.

For the record, what was said in the media about Hefner in the early 2000s pales beside what has come out about him in recent years.

“Another thing that reminds me of a cult,” Holly continues, “is how it was so easy to get isolated from the outside world there.”

Isolation is a key mechanism behind cults, where members are encouraged to cut ties with anyone not part of their group.

“You had a 9 o’clock curfew,” Holly recalls.

“You were encouraged to not have friends over,” Holly describes of her time at the mansion.

“You weren’t really allowed to leave,” she characterizes.

Holly adds: “unless it was, like, a family holiday.”

We then see old footage of the girls being interviewed, asked about the “rules” of the house.

They were not, they admitted, permitted to have boyfriends.

Quickly covering for themselves, the ladies characterized Hefner as being their “boyfriend.”

“The sex always happened the same time, the same night,” Holly recalls.

“We would go out to a club every Wednesday and Friday,” she describes.

“And,” she details, “that would be expected when we got home.”

Holly did have a waitressing job, she says, which she kept to only one day a week.

She wanted to make sure that she would not have to go job hunting whenever her time at the mansion came to an end.

However, even that limited time out of the mansion made Hefner “jealous,” she reports.

“He said it made him ‘jealous,’ and he would appreciate it if I quit my job,” Holly tells the camera.

“So instead,” she shares, “we were given $1,000 a week as an allowance.”

On the surface, that almost sounds like a fair solution.

$1,000 a week would be a decent middle class salary now (for someone with no kids or expenses) and even more valuable at the time.

Even so, it’s hard to say if it’s worth the restrictions that she describes.

If you’re surrendering almost all of the hours of your day and literally living at your job, your pay should reflect that.

But then, Holly is being careful to describe this as an “allowance,” and it’s clear that Hefner did the same.

it’s clear that it wasn’t the same as a direct payment, and seemed less about rewarding the girls for their labor to please Hefner and more like another tool of control.

It will be interesting to hear what more Holly has to say, and what others choose to reveal, as the documentary unfolds.

Holly Madison: I Was Gaslit Into Telling LIES About Girls Next Door!

Somehow, even over a decade after the show ended, Girls Next Door keeps giving drama.

Recently, there was a huge podcast tell-all interview about Holly Madison’s time at the Playboy Mansion.

But that still left a lot of ground to cover.

Holly has now posted her own Q&A to address what fans think that they know.

Andy Cohen recently shared a lot on For Real: The Story of Reality TV.

However, she and Bridget Marquardt declined production’s invitation to provide input.

As a result, Kendra Wilkinson and executive producer Kevin Burns filled that role … and Holly says that they got things wrong.

“Bridget and I were both asked to participate in that, we both said no,” Holly told viewers.

She explained: “I thought it didn’t sound like anything I’d be interested in.”

“When it comes to my story about that time in my life, I’m really particular,” Holly admitted.

Holly shared that she is picky “about who I will talk to and who I will do interviews with about it.”

She feels this way “because I’m so over just the Playboy version of stories and having myself edited to fit that.”

Holly added: “I didn’t trust it.”

Of course, this meant that Holly’s side of the story did not get told at all.

Which meant that there was no one to challenge Burns’ claim about Bridget.

He alleged that she “would have a stopwatch and she would track how many screen minutes Kendra would get.”

“Completely untrue and I’m kind of grossed out he even said that,” Holly stated.

“First of all,” she asked, “why he would accuse Bridget of that and bring her into it, I have no idea.”

Holly then characterized Bridget as “the sweetest, most unproblematic person” who “never did anything to him.”

“This guy was a very weird person,” Holly said of Burns.

“I used to really like him, I thought he was charming, I thought he was fun to talk to,” she admitted.

“But,” Holly shared, “over the years I realized what a manipulator he was.”

Holly observed “how he tried to play the three of us against each other.”

She added that this went on “even past Girls Next Door.”

Holly explained that he had a motive to do this “because he produced our spinoffs too.”

“He would try and play us off each other,” Holly shared.

“And,” she continued, “make us jealous of each other.”

Holly explained that his aim was “to get us to do things he wanted for the show.”

“I wouldn’t say I enjoyed doing the show until Season 3,” Holly admitted.

However, she said that she was unhappy for years during her time at the mansion until the show began to film.

When that happened, she recalled, everyone seemed to be getting along better and she felt happier than before.

“I know I’ve talked a lot about things at the mansion not being so great,” Holly acknowledged.

“But I was there for 7 years total,” she reminded everyone.

“And,” Holly expressed, “for the first 3.5 years, things were really, really miserable.”

“If cameras would have been around the first year I lived there, it would have been crazy,” Holly characterized.

She described: “It would have been like a dark, depressing documentary.”

“It was a great opportunity,” Holly assessed, “and it turned a lot of the negativity of the situation into a positive situation in a lot of ways.”

“That was a happy time in my life,” Holly recalled.

She quickly admitted: “not 100% happy … I wasn’t totally happy with the personal life relationship.”

Holly then added: “But it was way better than it had been in the past.”

Holly also opened up about how she and the other “Girls” were “treated like children.”

They were pressured, she described, into signing contracts before attorneys or managers could review them.

“We just didn’t have any say or couldn’t negotiate those at all,” Holly lamented.

As a result, Holly shared that there are no residuals from the show, and they were not given a heads up about many things.

For example, they were not forewarned that the show would have nudity in any form.

“The whole thing is gross to me,” Holly reflected.

As you can see in the clip that we included, Holly also explained exactly how producers asked leading questions again and again.

The goal, she said, was to prompt her to say exactly what they wanted for a storyline.

As a result, she would sometimes be locked in a battle of wills, feeling like she was being “brainwashed” into telling a lie on camera.

Holly Madison Still Talking About Sex With Hugh Hefner, Kendra Wilkinson Reacts in Hilarious Fashion

It looks like Kendra Wilkinson has found a lot of forgiveness for people she never thought she’d let go.

As you may know, it has been more than two years since her divorce. She has had time to process.

Kendra has also clearly done a lot of growing, on a personal level.

So when Holly Madison tried to reignite their age-old feud, Kendra had a stunning response.

“I’m not trying to slut-shame anybody or anything,” a Holly Madison quote begins.

“But,” the quote continues, “nobody ever got asked to move in unless they had slept with him.”

When E! News shared this quote on Instagram, Kendra Wilkinson could not resist replying.

Kendry left a very public comment from her own Instagram account.

“Dude … it’s 2021,” she pointed out.

In other words, it’s been way too many years to get into this again.

Kendra Wilkinson reply to Holly Madison quote on enews IG

Naturally, there were literally hundreds of replies (and yes, I went through all of them).

Kendra acknowledged that she’s commenting now and has feuded with Holly in the past, but …

“But times have changed,” Kendra wrote.

Kendra Wilkinson IG - times have changed; I forgive and have kids

“I forgive,” Kendra noted.

“And have kids to love and focus on,” she expressed.

Kendra is a mother of two who loves her children very much.

Kendra Wilkinson IG - how am I hating? I'm all love now, baby

“How am I hating?” Kendra asked in response to another comment.

“She’s [the] one out there,” she noted.

Kendra affirmed: “I’m all love now, baby.”

“If you believe this will help more women,” Kendra wrote elsewhere, “then I will try to understand.”

“I wish I had more time with Holly to understand this side,” she expressed.

Kendra then wrote: “I wish her the best in life and [that] this helps heal her.”

So, to clarify, Holly was simply speaking on a podcast this week.

She was explaining how, in order to move into the Playboy Mansion, she had first had to sleep with Hugh Hefner.

Her quote was also clearly taking a shot at what Kendra said long, long ago.

In 2014 — which I am sorry to say was seven entire years ago — Kendra told a very different story.

“I moved in [to the mansion], and weeks went by, and I didn’t know ‘sex’ was involved,” she claimed at the time.

Kendra said that this was “because I knew nothing about Playboy — I had just graduated high school.”

While that last line makes many of us understandably sick to our stomachs … there’s more to this.

Kendra and Holly had very different takeaways from their time at that infamous mansion.

Holly did not come away a happy camper.

But at least in public statements, Kendra had a positive spin on her history.

In response, Holly and Kendra feuded for years.

This is just another area where they clashed … leaving some fans to wonder how differently they may have been treated.

But Kendra’s current attitude, as displayed in these comments, are not what fans expected.

She has often been seen as having a short fuse.

It is inspiring to see Kendra’s personal growth.

Congratulations to Kendra for outgrowing a feud — one that she even might have further monetized.

Kendra had a lot of factors in her background, from her family to becoming part of a harem at a young age, that might have set her up for failure.

She is doing so well. Good for her.
