Secrets of Playboy Accuses Company of Covering Horrific Assaults to Protect Brand

For decades, Playboy deliberately cultivated the image of “sexual liberation,” though perhaps co-opted is the better term.

Given that the brand was always about women on display for men’s enjoyment, many suspected that something wasn’t right with Hugh Hefner.

Numerous women who were part of that world have described the Playboy Mansion as a gaslighting cult and worse.

The Secrets of Playboy docuseries has now exposed how a “clean-up crew” helped keep Playboy’s image clean for so long.

On the third episode of A&E’s Secrets of Playboy, viewers heard from a number of women who were Bunnies in the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s.

This was Playboy’s era, a time when the media empire projected the illusion of how male customers might live if they were fabulously wealthy.

That’s a fine fantasy to which to cater. But maintaining the image came at a bitter cost to many women.

Secrets of Playboy still 05 of 12

P.J. Mastenw orked for Playboy from 1972 to 1982, where she had a front row seat to dozens of incidents.

She knew of the alleged sexual abuse and sexual assaults through her romantic relationship with the head of security, Joe Piastro.

Speaking to the camera, Masten estimated that there were probably 40 to 50 young women who were silenced during that time following abuse or sexual violence.

“It was a lucrative job [so women] were afraid to come forward with a VIP assault,” Masten explained.

“They would lose their job,” she warned, “because that’s how it worked with Playboy. You open your mouth, you’re out of here.”

Masten explained: “And there was a constant turnover of bunnies. Constant.”

“If anything scandalous happened, we had to clean it up so it would not hit the press,” Masten described grimly.

“And it certainly wouldn’t go to the police department,” she detailed.

“And there were scandals in every club,” Masten stated. “You weren’t allowed to take them to a hospital.”

“It was a big thing for Hefner to not have that kind of heat,” Masten described. “He did not want the LAPD coming down on him.”

Masten then went on to share an absolute horror story of what happened to a pair of sisters who were in their early 20s.

The new hires, or “Baby Bunnies,” were entertaining late Soul Train host Don Cornelius, who was a Playboy VIP Gold Member.

According to Masten, he invited the women to his home and “it was encouraged to take care of the big VIPs.”

Masten described: “But once they left the club, they were not protected — especially from the VIPs that were chosen by Hefner.”

Heartbreakingly, she shared: “We didn’t hear from them for three days.”

Masten shared the horrific allegations: “These two young Bunnies were at Don Cornelius’ house and they were separated.”

“One was locked in one room and the other was in another room,” she described.

“They were tied up and bound, and the sister could hear her screaming,” Masten added.

Masten went on to describe the women being abused and raped with foreign objects, commenting: “It was horrible, horrible.”

It was only after one of the sisters escaped and contacted Playboy that security was sent to get the “bloody, battered, drugged” girls.

Masten stated her belief that Hefner must have learned about this because he read security reports, yet nothing was done about Don Cornelius.

Masten described similar horrific assaults, including of a group of women being assaulted in a remote cabin.

Women were drugged and then their assaults were filmed.

When they were threatened with revenge porn, Masten described, they were then fired to protect the Playboy brand.

Secrets of Playboy still 07 of 12

The most vulnerable women, Masten noted, were the new girls — younger, without other women friends at the company.

Better connected Bunnies could get better protection, or at least a warning about who was dangerous.

From Masten’s characterization and these grisly allegations, it sounds like the company was more interested in protecting its image than the women in its employ.

Secrets of Playboy Docuseries Under Fire as Former Playmates Defend Hugh Hefner

Hugh Hefner and his infamous mansion were once thought of us cultural oddities but otherwise unremarkable.

In recent years, however, life inside the Playboy Mansion has lost some of its mystery in the worst imaginable ways.

Women who lived there with Hefner have described feeling as if they were in a gaslighting cult.

With the recent docuseries in the spotlight, hundreds of people with ties to the Playboy brand are insisting that their experiences were much better.

Secrets of Playboy still 02 of 12

Hundreds of former Playboy Bunnies, Playmates, ex-girlfriends, and employees signed an open letter.

In the letter, obtained by People this week, they denounced A&E’s Secrets of Playboy docuseries.

The general allegations against Hefner, who passed away several years ago at the age of 91, were also condemned.

Secrets of Playboy still 11 of 12

“We sign our names to support Hugh M. Hefner,” the letter reads.

“From all we know of Hef, he was a person of upstanding character,” the letter describes.

The letter praises Hefner for his perceived “exceptional kindness, and dedication to free thought.”

Secrets of Playboy still 10 of 12

“He demonstrated a commitment to living an honest life beyond everything else,” the open letter asserts.

“Our time within Hugh Hefner’s Playboy and the organization’s subsidiaries remains a period all of us are fond of,” the letter adds.

“I proudly sign this letter in recognition of Hugh Hefner’s character,” the letter continues, “amid unfounded allegations in the A&E show.”

Secrets of Playboy still 12 of 12

A&E responded, reporting that they did not initially receive the letter but issuing a reply nonetheless.

“The stories shared in Secrets of Playboy are the personal experiences of the documentary’s participants,” the network explained.

“And,” A&E’s reply cotninued, “deserve to be told despite how difficult they may be for some to hear.”

Secrets of Playboy still 06 of 12

“Signatures on a letter, or a different experience with Mr. Hefner or the Playboy culture,” A&E noted.

A&E’s reply continued: “do not negate the experiences of those who have come forward to share their truth on the series.”

“And,” the network concluded, “we look forward to continuing to bring these stories to light.”

Secrets of Playboy still 08 of 12

That is an extremely diplomatic statement, but it’s also entirely correct.

If hundreds of people have a good experience — as employees, as theme park guests, as customers — that is great for them.

If dozens of people have a very different experience in the same context, neither party’s lived realities cancel out another’s.

Secrets of Playboy still 01 of 12

We saw some of this during the first month of the #MeToo movement.

As courageous survivors came forward with their stories, a few people issued public denials based upon their own experiences.

One needs to remember that a bad man might be very good to some people, and still be a bad man.

Secrets of Playboy still 07 of 12

That might sound like we are dismissing the claims of Hefner’s supporters — far from it.

First of all, their experiences are not invalidated by those of his detractors, either.

And we have to point out something about the nature of documentaries: they don’t have to be honest.

Secrets of Playboy still 09 of 12

We don’t mean that anyone participating in this docuseries is lying, but rather that we should remember that there’s no perjury standard for a documentary.

Relatedly, documentaries take money to produce which means that they need to pay for themselves by being watched and being interesting.

Nobody’s going to watch an “explosive” documentary about how the lecherous old man was nice, even if it were true, so documentaries can feel one-sided.

Secrets of Playboy still 05 of 12

That said, there are too many horror stories related to the Playboy Mansion and Hugh Hefner to ignore.

(Look, anybody whose house comes up in a conversation about R. Kelly’s crimes is not in good company, okay?)

Perhaps those who signed the letter were more fortunate than those who participated in the docuseries. Life is complicated.

Holly Madison: The Playboy Mansion was a Toxic Gaslighting Cult!

According to grim accusations made by multiple exes of Hugh Hefner, the Playboy Mansion could be a house of horrors at times.

Holly Madison has been outspoken about her own lived experiences under that roof.

In a new docuseries, Secrets of Playboy, viewers are getting a grim look at what that time was actually like.

According to Holly, the mansion had a cult-like atmosphere where the girls were gaslit, isolated, and controlled.

Secrets of Playboy premieres on A&E on January 24.

In this sneak peek clip of the new docuseries, Holly Madison is interviewed.

All the while, viewers are shown footage of the mansion, including its walls and gates.

“The reason I think the mansion was very cult-like looking back on it,” Holly’s voice begins to explain.

The reason “is because we were all kind of gaslit.”

“And,” Holly continues, “expected to think of Hef as like this really good guy.”

Holly, of course, was one of the women in a relationship with Hugh Hefner from 2001 through 2008.

Gaslighting refers to deliberately making people doubt their own senses and memories in order to make them believe that they are insane.

This abusive manipulation technique is often misused on social media to simply mean “lying,” but takes its name from a play.

It’s clear that Holly means the term in its actual meaning, as the environment encouraged her to discount her own perceptions.

“And you started to feel like, ‘Oh, he’s not what they say in the media, he’s just a nice man,'” she characterizes.

For the record, what was said in the media about Hefner in the early 2000s pales beside what has come out about him in recent years.

“Another thing that reminds me of a cult,” Holly continues, “is how it was so easy to get isolated from the outside world there.”

Isolation is a key mechanism behind cults, where members are encouraged to cut ties with anyone not part of their group.

“You had a 9 o’clock curfew,” Holly recalls.

“You were encouraged to not have friends over,” Holly describes of her time at the mansion.

“You weren’t really allowed to leave,” she characterizes.

Holly adds: “unless it was, like, a family holiday.”

We then see old footage of the girls being interviewed, asked about the “rules” of the house.

They were not, they admitted, permitted to have boyfriends.

Quickly covering for themselves, the ladies characterized Hefner as being their “boyfriend.”

“The sex always happened the same time, the same night,” Holly recalls.

“We would go out to a club every Wednesday and Friday,” she describes.

“And,” she details, “that would be expected when we got home.”

Holly did have a waitressing job, she says, which she kept to only one day a week.

She wanted to make sure that she would not have to go job hunting whenever her time at the mansion came to an end.

However, even that limited time out of the mansion made Hefner “jealous,” she reports.

“He said it made him ‘jealous,’ and he would appreciate it if I quit my job,” Holly tells the camera.

“So instead,” she shares, “we were given $1,000 a week as an allowance.”

On the surface, that almost sounds like a fair solution.

$1,000 a week would be a decent middle class salary now (for someone with no kids or expenses) and even more valuable at the time.

Even so, it’s hard to say if it’s worth the restrictions that she describes.

If you’re surrendering almost all of the hours of your day and literally living at your job, your pay should reflect that.

But then, Holly is being careful to describe this as an “allowance,” and it’s clear that Hefner did the same.

it’s clear that it wasn’t the same as a direct payment, and seemed less about rewarding the girls for their labor to please Hefner and more like another tool of control.

It will be interesting to hear what more Holly has to say, and what others choose to reveal, as the documentary unfolds.
