Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott spent most of 2021 fanning the flames of divorce rumors with their every word and deed.
From very public confrontations to not wearing their rings to attorney meetings to separate vacations and holiday messages, things seem over.
There have been some reconciliation hints dropped, but not enough to stem the expectation that their marriage is on its last leg.
Now, Dean has been spotted hanging out with his ex-wife, Mary Jo Eustace.
Dean McDermott himself reposted an Instagram Story this week that was originally posted by Jack, the son that he shares with Mary Jo Eustace.
Jack, who is 23, was chatting with his parents at Bottle Club Pub, in San Francisco.
“LOOK WHO’S HERE!!!!” Jack captioned the post, a caption that remained intact when Dean shared it.
The post itself is unsurprising — it is only natural that two parents would hang out with their adult son and chat over drinks.
Given that Dean and Tori have five children together, the logistics of a hangout like this are probably more complicated than any of them would like.
But people did take notice of the two exes hanging out, in part because Dean and Tori’s activities are under a lot of scrutiny as the world speculates about where things stand.
Dean and Mary Jo were married for thirteen years — from 1993 until 2006.
Famously, there were a lot of hard feelings for years after their split (in part because they were still together when Dean and Tori … met).
However, the two made nice in October of 2019, even opening up on Dean’s podcast about how they learned to have a healthier coparenting relationship.
“We hadn’t talked in over three years,” Dean admitted at the time, just weeks after their son’s 21st birthday.
“We would get into this routine,” he explained. “She’d text me something or I’d text her and we’d get into this back and forth off just being nasty to each other.”
Dean added: “And then finally I go, ‘OK I have had enough. I am blocking you.’”
Mary Jo said that she did continue to have an open line of communication — not with Dean, but with Tori — during that time.
“She didn’t block me. She lets me text her,” Mary Jo revealed.
However, she didn’t truly bond with Tori until Jack’s 2019 birthday party. “The first thing she said was, ‘I’ll sit beside you,’ and she did.”
“It was on. It was full game-on,” Mary Jo characterized.
“Three or four hours, we had the most amazing time,” she recalled. “We had incredible conversations.”
Even without the circumstances of how Dean and Tori met, very few people have that kind of relationship with an ex’s spouse (or a spouse’s ex).
It is less clear where Dean and Tori stand these days.
More than a year ago, Tori admitted that she and Dean were no longer sharing a bedroom.
Reports from around that time described a couple who were over in all but name, with plenty of evidence to back it up. Will Tori become another formal ex, or will they somehow patch things up?
Just a few months ago, Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott were spotted fighting in a 7/11 parking lot.
That came after months of obvious social media snubs, missing wedding rings, and meetings with attorneys.
Tuesday was International Women’s Day, and Dean posted a pretty touching tribute.
In addition to praising his daughters, Dean also prominently featured Tori in his post. Are things back on track?
On March 8, Dean McDermott took to Instagram to post a tribute to some women who personally inspire him.
“Happy International Women’s Day to these incredibly smart, creative, strong, fierce and funny Women,” he wrote.
Dean then gushed: “I’m so blessed to have you in my life.”
“I love you So Much!!” Dean expressed.
He concluded his post with the tags: “#happyinternationalwomensday #luckyguy.”
His post included four photos.
Two were of his daughters.
Stella is 13. Hattie is 10. They are young women, even though they are still children.
The other two photos were of the same woman: Tori Spelling herself.
That … is pretty darn surprising, considering how things were going for basically all of last year.
Some things were speculation based upon months without wedding rings being worn and obvious signs on social media.
Other things were more concrete, like the married couple no longer sharing a bed.
Tori herself is the one who told the public that she and Dean were sleeping in different rooms.
Now, many couples — married or otherwise — do this for a host of reasons, from work schedules to snoring to an open marriage, and beyond.
But when a couple previously shared a bed and abruptly moves to different rooms without a clear reason, it can often mean a relationship breakdown.
Dean and Tori seemed to ignore each other in various social media posts.
They were always sure to praise their children and speak to their fans.
But when only one parent shows up in the photos of the family Christmas trip … something’s usually up.
And then of course came the numerous reports about Tori and Dean’s troubled marriage.
One thing that was hammered home again and again was that they weren’t financially in a position to get a divorce.
Divorces cost money. Even separation costs money. With five kids and a slew of pets, it wasn’t in the budget.
So we have to ask what exactly Dean’s post means.
He didn’t just share a photo of Tori standing with their two daughters.
He shared separate pictures, making the inclusion of Tori a voluntary choice — one that he made twice.
The first and most obvious conclusion to draw would be that, one year later, things are much better.
While there is no justification for the ridiculous “separation periods” required to file divorce in many states, sometimes the inconvenience of filing for divorce can “save” a marriage.
That’s not necessarily a healthy thing for those involved, but some wonder if Tori and Dean just found a happy balance despite all odds.
The second conclusion is a bit more cautious, and simply says that they’re getting along a little better.
Co-parents don’t have to be falling back in love with each other to praise one another, and many co-parents remain friends long after a split.
Dean may have given Tori a shoutout simply because they share a lot of happy history and five amazing children.
Finally, Dean could conceivably be putting a happy spin on International Women’s Day for the sake of his kids.
You don’t need to actually love someone to give them an affectionate shout-out on a holiday. Lots of people smile and lie to family.
Sometimes, an Instagram post is just an Instagram post, and doesn’t entirely reflect the thoughts of the person who made it.
Until Tori and Dean see fit to tell us otherwise, we are going to have to continue to make educated guesses about where things stand.
That said, Dean’s tone and photo choices and those affectionate tags strongly suggest that things are better than they were for all of last year.

These days, it sounds like the only thing keeping Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott from divorcing is that divorce is expensive.
Considering how Tori snubbed Dean on his birthday, people had already guessed how the holidays might go.
They were right.
Tori had a holly, jolly Christmas and New Year’s with her kids … but Dean was nowhere in the picture. Literally.
While many — hopefully most — Americans spent most of the holidays at home given the latest miserable surge of COVID-19, Tori Spelling was looking for something different.
She took her five kids on a winter vacation.
14-year-old Liam, 13-year-old Stella, 10-year-old Hattie, 9-year-old Finn, and 4-year-old Beau went with their mother to Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa.
“Happy New Year’s Eve 2021,” Tori captioned on Instagram alongside a festive family photo.
“The kiddos and I were so excited to continue our family tradition,” she explained.
Tori detailed that this vacation has been a habit “since my oldest were babies.”
“Love you @lakearrowheadresortandspa!” Tori captioned a photo, featuring her and four of her five children.
The photo went up on Friday, December 31.
She explained that this fun family tradition did not begin with her.
“My parents used to bring my brother and I here growing up,” Tori shared.
“I wanted my kids to continue that tradition,” she expressed.
Tori then wrote: “I can’t wait for my kids to bring their kids here one day!”
Tori then divulged the identity of her photographer — her son, Liam.
“Thx @liammcdermott2007 for taking an awesome pic,” she credited her son.
In addition to being a sweet shoutout, that was also confirmation that Dean was not simply hidden behind the lens.
The next day, Tori shared a not-too-uncommon confession.
While it is traditional to be conscious and ring in the New Year at midnight, Tori did not remain awake long enough to witness Miley’s wardrobe malfunction.
“In full disclosure I was in bed asleep by 10 pm last night,” Tori admitted. “I know total party animal.”
So where was Dean McDermott while his children (and, technically, his wife) were off vacationing?
He spent the holiday in bed, and we don’t mean toasting the New Year with a side piece or two.
Instead, he revealed that he is “sick as a dog” right now.
“I am not going to let that dampen my spirits,” Dean vowed to his Instagram followers.
“2022 is going to be awesome,” he affirmed, as if willing this unlikely statement into being.
Dean then added: “2022, we’re going to get through.”
“Wishing everybody much much love and happiness and success in the new year,” Dean told his fans and followers.
“Health, wealth, and prosperity,” he added.
In his caption, Dean clarified that he was sick with pneumonia. We of course wish him a full and speedy recovery.
Tori and Dean spent most of 2021 fanning the flames of extremely believable divorce rumors.
First of all, neither of them have been spotted wearing their wedding rings in public or in private since the first round of vaccinations.
Then there have been sightings of Dean exuding major divorced dad energy, Tori visiting an attorney, and the two squabbling in public.

Apparently, the usual disagreements — money and how it’s spent — helped to tear them apart.
Early last year, Dean returned home from an extended work trip and they both seemed kind of done with being married.
So why haven’t they gone for it? For one thing, Tori and Dean can’t even degree on divorce.
