Amber Portwood: Why Does She Hate Kristina Shirley So Friggen Much?

Whether it’s on social media or on stage at the reunion, one conflict is not going away.

Amber Portwood despises Kristina Shirley and blames her for, well, just about everything.

This explosive, very one-sided conflict has been playing out on screen and off of it.

Why exactly does Amber hate Gary’s wife so much?

Let’s start at the beginning … well, no. Let’s start several weeks ago.

On the Tuesday, March 30 episode, Gary and Kristina were helping Leah plan her birthday party.

Specifically, they needed to hammer out plans with friends and also plans for family.

Gary Shirley - Teen Mom OG sneak peek

Leah was relatably enjoying some string cheese when she shared her birthday aspirations.

“I want to do something with friends and go shopping and get our nails done and go to lunch,” she reealed.

Then, for the family gathering, Leah wanted to invite Gary, Kristina, little sister Emilee, and grandma Tanya.

Leah Shirley - Teen Mom OG sneak peek

Despite everything that she’s put him through, Gary is a cooperate co-parent.

He quickly reminded Leah about Amber. Leah was … not enthused.

“I don’t want to,” she protests about inviting her mother to take part in her birthday plans.

“I’d tell you it’s really important that, you know, you spend time with your mom,” Gary suggested.

Leah was not feeling the same vibe.

She gracefully replied: “We don’t really have a bond like that.”

“Twelve years and she hasn’t really done anything,” Leah pointed out.

When it comes to actual maternal figures, there was someone doing those things for her.

Or, as Leah phrased it at the time: “That’s kind of been like Kristina’s spot.”

Amber’s absence wasn’t just disinterest … but that’s not really a defense of her.

Amber has a whole criminal history. She served 17 months behind bars from 2012-2013.

Even now, Amber is currently on probation for her latest attack on a baby daddy — Andrew Glennon.

Kristina Shirley - Teen Mom OG sneak peek

Kristina was quick to remind Leah: “I’m just the bonus mom, though.”

Gary added: “I don’t want you writing your mom off and saying ‘I can’t have a relationship with her.'”

His dream, he said, was that “at some point” Leah would be on good terms with her mother.

Leah had a scathing but not unfair view of Amber’s role in her life.

“All she did was just give birth to me and then just kind of left,” she characterized.

Gary disagreed: “She might not have always been there, but she was there.”

Gary vocally feared that Leah might end up “missing out” on a bonding activity with Amber.

He suggested her birthday party as an opportunity to make up for lost time.

Gary reasoned that his daughter “won’t have what [she] missed” unless she gives Amber a chance.

Leah, being a bright and reasonable young woman, relented.

“I guess that maybe she can come to the family party,” she announced.

Gary immediately texted Amber to invite her to attend.

Of course, it was all for nothing — thanks to Amber.

She elected to not go, wanting to spend one-on-one time with Leah instead.

But she saw Leah’s reluctant moment on screen … and flipped the eff out.

“When you’re a whore, you’re a whore!” Amber declared on Instagram Live.

Fortunately, she was not talking about Leah. Unfortunately, she was talking about Kristina.

“When you’re a homewrecker, you’re a homewrecker,” she spat. “When you’re a liar, you’re a liar.”

“I was told that when I got out of prison, I would have my family,” Amber ranted.

“All the while I was being cheated on,” she accused, though it’s unclear how Kristina could be at fault for that.

“I’m not jealous of Kristina, there is nothing about Kristina that even makes me jealous in any sense,” she claimed.

“I try to invest time with Leah all the time, all the time. It’s all I ever do,” Amber insisted.

“[Kristina] doesn’t take care of my daughter,” she claimed, seemingly referring to finances.

“No, Gary does not clothe her, feed her,” Amber declared. “Gary wouldn’t have a job if it wasn’t for me in the very beginning.”

Now, Amber did seem to cool down enough to leave a touching message for Leah in a public Instagram post.

“I know you are going through a lot and there are many things I need to do to make things right,” she expressed.

Amber then wrote: “However, I will always love you, my beautiful daughter.”

Of course, Amber also went on a rant about how one never sees Kristina’s daughter on Kristina’s Instagram.

Kristina’s daughter is a minor and not a public figure, something that Amber ensured Leah would be.

It is not unwise for Kristina to keep her daughter’s face off of Instagram, but Amber saw it as some sort of failing.

At the reunion, Amber praised Gary: “You’ve always been there for me when I’ve asked you to be there for me.”

“You said I could trust you and I did trust you,” she noted.

“But I can’t trust your wife,” Amber spat, “and she has sat there and got in the way of me and my daughter [over and over].”

“That was amazing to actually hear you sticking up for me, but your wife is absolutely horrible at it,” Amber insisted.

“I really hope in the future we can have a good relationship,” she claimed.

Amber then expressed: “But me and Kristina … it’s not going to be like that.”

Amber Portwood Rejected by Leah: We Don’t Have a Bond! She’s Never There for Me

To say that people have questioned Amber Portwood’s qualifications as a mother is an understatement.

Leah is growing up, and it’s really no surprise that she is adding her voice to the chorus.

In this clip, you can see Gary try to talk his preteen daughter into spending time with her mom.

Leah is just not feeling it. She explains why, and honestly, can you blame her?

This Teen Mom OG sneak peek begins at Amber’s home in Indiana.

“A couple of weeks ago Leah got really upset when our plans fell through,” she says in reference to the March 23 episode.

“And,” Amber reports, “things have felt off ever since.”

At that time, Amber had canceled plans to do Leah’s makeup because she was experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.

The pandemic has ruined so many opportunities for families.

However, Amber is now expressing hope that they can “be together,” and packs a tidy bag of makeup brushes.

We then see Gary Shirley’s home.

This is where Leah lives with Gary and his wife, Kristina.

Gary is approaching his 12-year-old daughter about her birthday plans.

Leah, who is eating what looks like a delicious piece of colby-jack string cheese, has some ideas in mind.

“I want to do something with friends and go shopping and get our nails done and go to lunch,” she tells her dad.

She lists her intended guests for the family side: Gary, Kristina, little sister Emilee, and grandma Tanya.

Gary immediately, as a cooperative co-parent, reminds Leah about Amber.

Leah, very age-appropriately, makes a face of reluctance.

“I don’t want to,” she protests about inviting her mother to take part in her birthday plans.

“I’d tell you it’s really important that, you know, you spend time with your mom,” Gary counsels.

That’s not how Leah sees things at all.

She notes: “We don’t really have a bond like that.”

“Twelve years and she hasn’t really done anything,” Leah expresses.

She points out that Gary’s wife has been more of a mother to her:

Specifically, Leah says: “That’s kind of been like Kristina’s spot.”

There has been more than just lack of interest behind Amber’s absence.

Amber has a lengthy criminal history and also served 17 months in prison from 2012-2013.

In fact, Amber is currently on probation for her latest attack — this time, on Andrew Glennon.

Kristina notes: “I’m just the bonus mom, though.”

Gary chimes in: “I don’t want you writing your mom off and saying ‘I can’t have a relationship with her.'”

He expresses a hope that “at some point” Leah and Amber will be on good terms.

Leah is not feeling that way at all.

“All she did was just give birth to me and then just kind of left,” she countered.

Gary countered: “She might not have always been there, but she was there.”

Is sometimes really good enough? Clearly, Leah doesn’t feel that way, and she’s not wrong.

But Gary stresses that he doesn’t want Leah “missing out” on the chance to bond with Amber.

He reasons that Leah “won’t have what [she] missed” if she doesn’t invite Amber into her life.

Finally, Leah agrees after seeing how important this is to her father.

“I guess that maybe she can come to the family party,” she says with a reluctant tone.

Triumphant, Gary sends Amber a text message to invite her to Leah’s family-side birthday celebration.

Teen Mom Husbands, Boyfriends, and Baby Daddies Ranked: Who’s #1?

So how great are all those guys on Teen Mom, huh?! Such remarkable specimens of manhood, every one of them, filled to the brim with integrity, compassion, and grace.

… Wait, like 85% of them are completely terrible human beings?

Well, huh.

Sure, some of them baby daddies are awful, but some of the aren’t! Some of them are kind of OK, and a few are even great!

Check out our ranking of all the Teen Mom fellas, from best to worst.

And prepare to be amazed, as always, at the level of awfulness on this show.

1. Cole DeBoer

Chelsea houska poses with fiance cole deboer and daughter aubree
Cole DeBoer is Chelsea Houska’s husband, and thank goodness for that. He’s a wonderful stepfather to Aubree (and he’s made it clear that he’s ready to adopt her if/when Adam gives up his parental rights for her like he did with his other child), he and Chelsea have two precious babies together and one on the way, and ever since he first came on the show, he’s been perfect.

He’s an easy number one, y’all.

2. Taylor McKinney

Maci bookout jayde and taylor mckinney photo
Taylor McKinney is Maci Bookout’s husband, and they share two children together, Jayde and Maverick — and they’re often talking about having more, whether it’s through more pregnancies or fostering and adoption. They’re also raising Bentley, the son Maci had with Ryan Edwards, and it’s safe to say that Taylor is doing all the heavy dad lifting there, too. Like, he coaches Bentley’s little league team, how sweet is that? And sure, Taylor drinks Bud Light like it’s water and he’s in a desert, but he’s an amazing father.

3. Jo Rivera

Kailyn lowry jo rivera photo
Jo Rivera is the father of Kailyn Lowry’s oldest son, Isaac, and he also shares a daughter named Vivi with his wife, Vee. Jo and Kailyn dated when they were teenagers, but it wasn’t long before they realized they were terrible together. They struggled with coparenting for a good few years, and sometimes they still struggle, but for the most part they’ve managed to put all their personal issues aside for the sake of Isaac. Also, Jo still lets Isaac hang out with Javi, his ex-stepdad, and how understanding is that? That’s something a good dad would do for sure.

4. Tyler Baltierra

Tyler baltierra catelynn lowell novalee hike pic
Tyler Baltierra has been with Catelynn Lowell since they were 12 years old (yes, literally), and when she got pregnant at 16, they placed their daughter up for adoption. They’ve since had two more children, daughters Nova and Vaeda, and they’ve been through just a lot of stuff together. He can be pretty insensitive sometimes, but it’s clear that he loves being a father and spending time with his girls. You love to see it.

5. Gary Shirley

Amber portwood gary shirley shirtless
Let’s just say it: Gary was not great in the early days of Teen Mom. He never did anything to deserve being abused by Amber, to be clear, but he was kind of a jerk. Fortunately he’s matured a bit over the years, and he seems like a great father to Leah and Emilee, the daughter he shares with wife Kristina. And thank goodness for that, because Leah in particular needs a whole lot of stability with Amber for a mom.

6. Corey Simms

Leah messer with corey simms
Corey Simms was married to Leah Messer, and they had twins Ali and Gracie. They got divorced when Leah couldn’t stay faithful to him (and also because they had twins and got married when they were teenagers), but Corey’s been a good father, and a good coparent with Leah. He’s just a good ol’ boy, y’all.

Gary Shirley: My Stepdad is in the ICU with Coronavirus!

Poor Gary Shirley.

The guy has the great misfortunate to be tied to Amber Portwood for the rest of this whole life, and now this.

In case you missed it, Gary revealed last weekend that his mother had officially tested positive for coronavirus.

He made the announcement on Mother’s Day, and he understandably seemed very upset about it all.

His mother works at an assisted living facility, so as he explained it, she was at a higher risk for catching the virus, meaning that it wasn’t a total shock when she tested positive.

Gary Shirley's mom

That certainly didn’t mean it wasn’t scary though.

The Teen Mom mainstay said that he’d been dropping off food for her on her porch, and that even though she’s sick, they’ve been practicing social distancing like he has been for the past few months.

With good reason.

Gary’s youngest daughter, Emilee, has an immunodeficiency disorder, so they’ve been taking the quarantine very seriously.

He and wife Kristina Anderson share Emiliee; Gary, of course, is also the father of Amber Portwood’s daughter Leah.

While the health crisis has been tough on everybody, it’s obvious that families like Gary’s are shouldering a huge burden.

Sadly, this weekend brings more tough news on that front.

In that post, Gary said that while his stepfather, Jody, hadn’t been tested, he’d been showing symptoms of the virus.

And now he has an update on that.

Unfortunately, it’s not a good one.

Gary and Jody

He shared some photos of Jody on Instagram, and in his caption for those photos, he asked his followers to “Please continue to pray for my family.”

“Jody (my stepdad) was rushed to the hospital a few days ago with very low levels of oxygen,” he continued.

“He was admitted into the Intensive Care Unit and diagnosed with Covid-19 & Pneumonia.”

Gary said that Jody is “receiving plasma, a new clinical drug and on a breathing machine in hopes to fight this virus.”

“As you can imagine this is very difficult on my family.”

He did finish things up with a bit of good news though.

“Update on my mom …. she is getting stronger everyday and on the mend,” he wrote.

Hopefully we can soon say the same about Jody.

Jody was featured in a storyline on Teen Mom OG a couple of seasons back – Gary always thought that he was his biological father, although he hadn’t been around for much of his life.

He said that he starting spending time with Gary sometime around 2014, and the two were building a relationship.

At the same time, he felt the need to take a paternity test to find out if Jody really was who he thought he was.

As it turned out, Jody wasn’t his biological father.

It was a devastating thing to learn, but Jody did make it clear that he wasn’t going anywhere. And at this point, it’s clear he was telling the truth.

Hopefully Jody gets better so he and Gary can continue getting closer.

Let’s keep thinking good thoughts for this family, OK?

Gary Shirley: My Mom Has Coronavirus … and Jody Too. Pray For Us!

Sad news from Anderson, Indiana this week.

And for once, it doesn’t have anything to do with Teen Mom OG cast member Amber Portwood being a terrible person.

Gary Shirley, Amber’s ex-boyfriend and the father of her daughter, Leah, just revealed some sad news about his family.

Yesterday, like so many other people, Gary hopped on social media to post a message about Mother’s Day.

But unfortunately, his message took a very tragic turn pretty quick.

Gary Shirley's mom

“This Mother’s Day is a little hard because my mother is very sick,” the 33-year-old MTV staple began.

“A week ago she was diagnosed with Covid-19.”

As for how she contracted it, Gary continued:

“Her line of work put her at a higher risk since she was working in activities and house keeping at an assisted living facility.”

“My wife and I have been trying to help by dropping off food (curbside) so she could focus on getting rest,” he added.

“We haven’t hugged her in about 3 months & and we haven’t had her over inside our home for about 3 months.:

“This has been extremely hard for all of us.”

He then revealed that his youngest daughter, Emilee, “has an immunodeficiency disorder where she gets sick easily,” so they’ve really been taking social distancing guidelines very seriously.

They’ve only gone out for supplies a few times, he said.

However, “I knew my mother would be exposed at some point due to her job which was very worrisome itself.”

“Now, with a confirmed case of covid-19 we are worried more and limited on what we can do to help,” he laments.

As for how she’s been handling the illness, Gary said that “She has good days and of course bad days like today.”

He also said that Jody, the man he thought was his biological father but recently found out was not, lives with her.

It sounds like Jody may have the virus as well now.

“And I knew it would only be a matter of time before he would get it, and of course …. I believe he has it now,” says Gary.

“He has the symptoms, but hasn’t had the test yet.”

Obviously this is both a sad and scary situation, but Gary is doing what he can to stay positive and help however he can.

He writes in a message re-posted by MTV on Facebook:

“I will be dropping off breakfast in the morning on the porch and wishing her a Happy Mother’s Day while praying for her.”

“All prayers are welcomed and much appreciated.”

Shirley finished off his message on a brighter note with a tribute to Kristina Anderson, his wife and the mother of Emilee.

Gary married Kristina in 2015. They welcomed Emilee that same year; She also has a child from a previous marriage.

“Happy Mother’s Day to all the beautiful mothers and a BIG Happy Mother’s Day to my amazing wife.”

Kristina’s oldest daughter, Karly, is around the same age as Leah. Gary and Amber had her more than 11 years ago!

One can’t help but feel terrible for all families in situations like this, with small children unable to visit an ailing relative.

Sadly, millions of people across the nation can relate.

While it doesn’t sound like Gary’s mom is experiencing a mild case, it also sounds like she’s not dangerously ill, either.

Here’s hoping. Hopefully she’ll recover soon, and hopefully not too long after that her loving son will be able to visit.

Nothing but good thoughts for the Shirley family!

Amber Portwood Meets Belgian Boyfriend For First Time, Makes Use of Gary Shirley Condoms!

When we first learned that Amber Portwood is dating a man from Belgium, we feared for the guy’s future.

After all, it was just a few months ago that Amber beat domestic violence charges that could have landed her behind bars.

Fortunately, when Amber met Dimitri Garcia at the airport on Tuesday’s episode of Teen Mom OG, he was protected in two respects:

Amber’s OG baby daddy, Gary Shirley, was there in case Portwood flew into one of her infamous rages and beat the guy down on sight.

And he also provided the happy couple with some It’s Gary Time! condoms for later in the evening.

It was a strange scene, but then, just about everything in Amber’s life is a little off-kilter these days.

Take a look:

Teen Mom OG: Amber Portwood COLLAPSES After Audio of Andrew Glennon Brawl Goes Public

Amber Portwood was forced to deal with a damning leak on Teen Mom OG this week.

And we don’t mean the kind related to a roof when it rains really hard.

We mean the kind related to how you treated your estranged boyfriend not long after you were arrested for allegedly assaulting him.

On Tuesday night, MTV viewers were once again transported back to last summer, shortly after Portwood was booked for attacking Andrew Glennon during a reported domestic dispute.

We had previously witnessed Portwood going to court over the incident — and, on this latest installment, we witnessed Portwood going all crazy after learning that audio from a fight she once had with Glennon was leaked online.

Gulp.

Or, really, double gulp.

After the disturbing assault audio made its way online, Amber wasn’t certain how to proceed, claiming on air that the recording was from a time she was struggling with her postpartum depression.

Her co-stars weren’t really sure how to be there for, either.

Moreover, Amber didn’t want to see her daughter, Leah, while she was in such a dark place, so she enlisted the help of Leah’s father, Gary Shirley.

“I’m remorseful for what I did, because I don’t want to be that person and I never did,” Portwood said.

She insisted that she already had the help she needed thanks to her psychiatrist. Gary was skeptical.

However, to his credit, he continued pressing, urging his ex to seek anger management classes for the sake of Leah and James, her young son with Glennon.

Amber initially protested, but eventually relented, and later that day, she and Shirley went to her first appointment.

It didn’t last long, though, for a frightening reason:

Portwood left the session in an ambulance after she fainted in the parking lot.

Wow.

After learning about Amber’s breakdown, Catelynn Lowell was reminded of all the times her mother had lashed out in the past.

More specifically, about her boyfriends and her relationships. Cate wisely decided to talk to her own psychiatrist about it.

“It took me back to when my mom would get in fights with her boyfriends and stuff,” Catelynn confessed, explaining as follows:

“I was older but I would always get in the middle of it to stop it or things like that, so it brought up a lot of sadness for James.

“I’m trying to be there for her and stuff, but it’s hard to navigate.”

The events surrounding Amber were the focus this week – as they have been all season long – but elsewhere on the episode:

  • Maci Bookout dealt with some major drama as she tried to convince Mackenzie Standifer and Ryan Edwards to come to Bentley’s birthday party,
  • Cheyenne Floyd worked on creating her own clothing line.
hugging josh

Yup, that was pretty much it. Hard to compete with the fallout from a rage-fueled machete attack … for better or worse.

Are you glad the popular show is centering so much around Portwood and her obvious problems these days?

Or would you like to see more of a balance?

Oh, Andrew … where do we begin? He loses points for his history of restraining orders, but the way he’s stepped up for baby James after Amber’s horrifying meltdown in July is definitely commendable. Since the arrest, we’ve heard plenty of evidence that’s proved that she’d been abusing him for nearly a year before the July assault, and Andrew has said that she’d even been rough with James, too. It looks like he’s placing James’ safety and wellbeing above all else, and if that’s not being a good dad, what is?
