Derick Dillard: I Had to Fill Out 423-Question Application Before Jim Bob Would Let Me Court Jill!

One of the most heavily-scrutinized aspects of life in the Duggar clan is the courtship process by which young people find suitable spouses.

Casual dating, premarital sex, and divorce are all forbidden in the Duggars’ world, so there’s a lot riding on every courtship.

Despite all that, the process moves fast — very fast.

Often, Duggars get engaged just a few weeks after they begin courting, and they’re married a few weeks after that.

So perhaps it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the family has its mate selection protocol down to a science.

Believe it or not, the process involves a written application that’s designed by Jim Bob to help weed out the losers and ensure that his grandkids are bred from only the best stock.

We sincerely wish we were joking/

As you might expect, the whole thing is intensely creepy.

Check out some of the more bizarre highlights from the list of 423 questions (!!!) that are presented to potential Duggar suitors.

It’s believed that both male and female courtship partners are forced to fill out the questionnaire, and of course, the responses are reviewed by the all-powerful shot-caller himself, James Robert Duggar.

Somehow, this family keeps getting weirder by the day.

1. Derick Spills the Tea

As you’re probably aware, Derick Dillard has been feuding with Jim Bob Duggar for quite some time now. It’s a messy situation, but on the bright side, it’s yielded some interesting revelations about life in the Duggar clan.

2. Going Back to the Archives

Of course, as some fans recently realized, Derick has been taking shots at Jim Bob for quite some time now. Take, for example, the Counting On episode in which Dillard spoke out about the infamous Courtship Questionnaire.

3. Bonding Brothers-In-Law

At the time that the episode was filmed, Jeremy Vuolo was still courting Jinger Duggar, and Derick shocked him with an unexpected question.

4. Truth or Der

Derick asked Jeremy if he had been “drill[ed]” on his “financial situation” by Jim Bob, adding that such questions can be found “on the 45-page application,” he said. “Page 27, section B, line four.”

5. Jim Bob In the Middle

It might sound like Der and Jer were just having a laugh at Jim Bob’s expense, but it turns out the application is not only real — it’s also much longer than they described.

6. Does the Fun Ever Start!

Around that time, there was a disagreement about the length of the application. Jessa Duggar claimed it’s only 30 pages, while Jeremy said that he “got sent a 50-page questionnaire.” It turns out, the current model clocks in at 423 questions — and we have all the highlights below!

Have Any of the Duggars Left the Church?

It’s impossible to enter into a discussion about the Duggar family without mentioning the very particular set of religious beliefs and customs that dominate most of their waking hours.

The family’s ultra-conservative views have been a top focal point for both fans and critics, with the former praising the Duggars for their piety, and the latter condemning them for their archaic views.

The Duggars have their religion to thank for their continued fame, but it’s also been the source of some of their most damaging scandals.

Almost two-thirds of Americans identify as Christians, but very few of them would feel at home in one of the Duggars’ church services.

Even fellow believers in the Duggars’ minuscule sect would likely balk at the prospect of raising their children as strictly as Jim Bob and Michelle have.

Their probable reasons for granting their own kids a longer leash would be fully supported by the Duggars’ current set of circumstances.

It stands to reason that if you use your faith to justify controlling every aspect of your children’s lives, they’re far more likely to rebel at the first opportunity.

And that’s exactly how the Duggars wound up in their current crisis — one that’s created an endless string of tabloid-friendly controversies and some deep divisions between parents and kids.

But before we attempt to determine whether any of the Duggar children have gone so far as to leave the church, we have to answer a more fundamental question.

Namely — what religion are the Duggars?

The answer is not as simple as you might think.

The Duggars are Independent Baptists — a fairly sizable sect that comprises roughly 2.5 percent of the US population, according to a study by the Pew Research Center.

Independent Baptists have a long history of far-right conservatism, having been founded by a small contingent who felt that more mainstream Baptist sects were becoming too liberal.

The Duggars, however, didn’t feel that the IB branch is conservative or insular enough on its own.

And so, they joined the Quiverfull movement.

The brainchild of Institute for Basic Life Principles founder Bill Gothard, the Quiverfull movement lost most of its members when Gothard was forced to step down amid a string of sex scandals.

But Jim Bob and Michelle have remained faithful members — and so, it seems, have most of their kids.

The IBLP and the Quiverfull movement teach that it’s the duty of every Christian woman to give birth to as many children as possible.

That’s why there’s pretty much always a pregnant Duggar.

Just this week, we learned that Jessa Duggar is expecting her fourth child.

At just 28 years old, Jessa seems to be planning on raising a double-digit-sized brood.

So it’s safe to assume that she’s still a believer in both the IBLP and the teachings of the disgraced Bill Gothard.

Her older sister, however, seems to have chosen a very different path.

Jill Duggar is no longer on speaking terms with her parents, and she seems to have little interest in following their belief system.

In recent months we learned that Jill drinks alcohol and uses birth control, both of which are major no-nos in the Duggars’ world.

She almost certainly practices some sort of evanglical faith, but odds are, she’s abandoned the Quiverfull movement and no longer attends services at an Independent Baptist church.

The other most likely candidate for defection is Jinger Duggar.

Jinger lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Jeremy Vuolo, who is currently studying at a local divinity school.

The Vuolos are Baptists, but they’ve abandoned many of the rules that define the Quiverfull lifestyle, including the one that requires women to wear long skirts at all times.

So Jinger has forged her own path (with the permission of her husband), but it currently looks as though she and Jill are currently the family’s only rebels.

We can only hope that some of their siblings will see the light as they gain more experience of the world.

The Duggars’ Most Awkward Televised Moments: Josh Sings! Ben Seewald Raps! We Cringe!

Every reality TV family struggles to perfect the same tricky balancing act:

How to share enough information with the world to make for compelling viewing, while at the same time, not giving away too much of your personal life?

This is particularly difficult in the case of the Duggar clan, as their carefully-curated public image is based almost entirely on secrets and lies.

That’s how we wind up with so many episodes based on scavenger hunts, and craft projects, and other boring crap that’s clearly staged for the cameras.

But every once in a while, the Duggars let their guards down and allow an honest, unscripted moment to make it to air.

And that’s how we wound up with these cringe-worth scenes.

Enjoy, and try not to die of second-hand embarassment!

Jim Bob & Michelle Duggar Accused of Being Overly-Sexual In Front of Kids at Christmas Party

If you know anything about the Duggars, you know that they’re obsessed with sex.

That may sound like a strange thing to say about a family that’s known for its strict courtship rules and its ultra-conservative brand of evangelical Christianity.

But it seems unlikely that anyone who doesn’t have sex on the brain 24/7 would craft such elaborate rules regarding their offspring’s sexuality.

While the Duggars are vehemently opposed to any sort of physical contact between the sexes prior to marriage, they’re also big on sending the message that married sex is better than a million one-night stands.

They represent a new brand of hedonistic fundamentalist:

They want credit for all kinds of self-sacirfice, but they also want you to know that their lives are totally kick-ass and awesome in ways you could never imagine.

It’s a weird balancing act, and it often requires Jim Bob and Michelle to pile on the PDA in inappropriate situations.

Flaunting your sexuality in public forums might not sound very Christian.

But then again, this is the same Jim Bob who justifies his “high-class hoarding” by reasoning that monetary wealth is a sign of God’s affection.

Anyway, Jim Bob and Michelle’s unfortunate tendency to make out in front of visibly uncomfortable people was on full display at their annual Christmas party.

The occasion was documented in obsessive detail by Jessa Duggar, and critics were quick to point out that several pics and videos showed JB and Michelle with their tongues down one another’s throats.

Here we see Jim Bob and Michelle sharing one of many intimate moments under the mistletoe.

It’s a little weird that their daughter is videotaping the occasion.

It’s even weirder that this is going on as several of the couple’s children, grandchildren, and children-in-law mill about.

Needless to say, a lot of fans were weirded out.

The Duggars, however, were not.

In fact, some of the kids cheered their parents on, hooting and hollering and making weird kissing noises all the while.

Folks, in case you weren’t already aware, this is a very weird family.

In the comments of Jessa’s posts, many fans were quick to call out the weirdness of Jim Bob and Michelle’s extended lip-lock.

“Gross. It’s like they feel like they have to prove the spark isn’t gone,” one commenter wrote.

“I’d imagine after having that many kids that sex is more of a chore than anything,” another remarked.

“I really think it’s because they are trying to prove to everyone that ‘waiting is worth it,” a third chimed in.

Another observed that the moment was “weird af,” noting that Jim Bob and Michelle are “so obsessed with being physical/sexual in front of their kids.”

We’re guessing that a lot of the kids wished they were somewhere else at that moment.

Hey, speaking of being somewhere else — can you guess who wasn’t in attendance at this year’s soiree?

Yes, Jill Duggar is still not on speaking terms with her parents, and we’re sure her life is all the better for it.

Asked about the party on Twitter, Jill’s husband, Derick Dillard, said that he and his wife were not invited.

“No, we were not invited or told about it,” he responded to a fan who asked if the couple snubbed Jill’s parents on purpose.

Well, Derick, it looks like you’re better off missing out — that was one wild party, and not in a good way.
